Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar and marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

It is especially known for the Hijrah, the migration of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah al-Mukarramah to Madinatul Munawwara.

This holy month is a time to increase in worship and observe Sunnah fasting. It is also an eventful month with the Day of Ashura, 10th of Muharram, as the highlight of its days.

Key events associated with Muharram include the following:

  • The Prophet ﷺ left Makkah while under threat from those who planned to harm him.
  • On the night of the Hijrah, Sayyidina Aliر slept in the bed of the Prophet ﷺ, placing himself in danger so that the Prophet ﷺ could leave safely.
  • During the journey, the Prophet ﷺ took shelter in the Cave of Thawr with his close companion, Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiqر. This is described in the Holy Qur’an, Surah at-Tawbah, verse 40:

“When they were in the cave and he said to his companion, ‘Do not be sad, Allah is with us.’ Then Allah sent His peace upon him and supported him with unseen angels…”

  • The 10th of Muharram is the Day of Ashura, commemorating the divine support and deliverance granted by Allah ﷻ to many of His Prophets (AS) after enduring hardship and trial.
  • Many years later, on the 2nd of Muharram, Imam Hussainر, the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, arrived in Karbala. He and members of his family and companions were later martyred in one of the most tragic and honoured events in Islamic history.
  • The Naqshbandi Tariqah traces its roots to the blessed Hijrah and therefore holds special significance for us. In the Cave of Thawr, the first Khatam Khwajagan was held in the gathering of the souls of the Saints of the Golden Chain, the 7,007 Naqshbandi Saints, and all those destined to attend through the ages.
  • The 14th of Muharram marks the birth of Imamul Tariqah Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Baha’uddin Shah Naqshband al-Uwaysi al-Bukhariق, the spiritual pillar of our Tariqah. On this day, mureeds receive blessings from this great Saint, who, by Allah ﷻ’s permission, will intercede for countless believers.

InsyaAllah, Muharram 1448H is expected to begin after Maghrib on Monday, 15th June 2026.

Eve of Muharram.

This is the last day of the Islamic year. Mawlana Sheikh Nazimق advised us to fast on both the last day of the year and the first day of the new year, as mentioned in his Sohbah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever fasts the last day of Dhul Hijjah and the first day of Muharram, he completes a whole year’s worth of fasting in that previous year, and Allah gives him penance for fifty [50] years.”

(Narrated by Ibn al-Abbasر, taken from Shaykh Adnan Kabbaniق’s book)

Here are the Recommended Practices for the Eve of Muharram (PDF here):

Fast on this day.

From Asar:

Perform a ritual bath (ghusl) for the sake of Allah Almighty, followed by two raka‘at Solatul Wudhu to welcome the New Hijri Year and the Holy Month of Muharram al-Haram.

Recite the End of Year Duʿa three times followed by Surah Al-Fatiha.

It is said that one who recites this duʿa three times, shaytan pours dirt on his own head, in sadness that the sins of the believer in the previous year had been forgiven.

From Maghrib:

At sunset, it is Sunnah to sight the new moon and recite the New Moon Sighting Duʿa.

Recite the Beginning of Year Duʿa three times followed by Surah Al-Fatiha.

It is said that whoever recites this duʿa three times, Allah ﷻ will appoint two Angels to accompany the believer, protecting him from fitnah and shaytan, in the coming year.

After reciting these duʿas, make many virtuous intentions, to be a better believer in the coming year.

Make intention to fast the next day.

Additionally, on this night of 1st Muharram

Al-Fatiha for their blessed souls.

Tuesday, 16th June 2026/ 1 Muharram 1448H

The New Muslim Year begins.

Mawlana Sheikh Muhammad Adil ar-Rabbaniق said:

“Our year is starting with goodness not evil. You enter this year by making du’ā’ for yourself, your family, your children, your homeland, your nation. You enter by asking for goodness, desiring true goodness, wanting the īmān of believers to increase, and asking guidance for people as goodness for them. You enter the year making du’ā asking that they also taste these beautiful days, these beautiful times. May they be granted that.”

Taken from The Hijrī Year, A Year of Blessings

Even fasting one day is greatly rewarded. Every day is counted like fasting thirty days. SubḥanAllah. The Prophet ﷺ promised Firdaws al-A‘la, the highest level in Paradise, for those who fast the first ten days of Muharram.

Taken from Muharram & The New Year

If unable to fast all the days, aim to fast on the 9th and 10th Muharram, 10th and 11th Muharram or 9th to 11th Muharram.

If you are only able to fast on one day, then fast on the 10th Muharram, the Day of Ashura.

Thursday, 18th June 2026/ 3 Muharram 1448H

Eve of Jumaah.

At the azan of Maghrib, we welcome the first, and in some countries, the only Friday within the first 10 days of Muharram.

Therefore, do not let this precious day pass without striving to make the most of it by sending abundant salawat upon our Holy Prophet ﷺ.

If you are able, consider fasting on Friday, as many virtues have been mentioned regarding it.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever fasts the 1st Friday of Muharram, Allah will forgive his preceding sins, and whoever fasts three days of Muharram Thursday, Friday and Saturday Allah will write for him worship and prayers for nine hundred years.”

(Narrated by Sayyidina Anasر, taken from Shaykh Adnan Kabbaniق’s book)

Tuesday, 23rd June 2026/ 8 Muharram 1448H

Night of 9th Muharram

Wednesday, 24th June 2026/ 9 Muharram 1448H

Eve of Ashura.

Mawlana Sheikh Muhammad Adilق said, we should fast either on the 9th and 10th, or 10th and 11th Muharram. The best would be from 9th to 11th Muharram. Sohbah can be found here.

Night of 10th Muharram

After Asar, about an hour before Maghrib, do recite the blessed names of the Martyrs of Karbala. Connecting to them for their Madad and Himmah.

We are highly encouraged to spend the night in vigil.

Thursday, 25th June 2026/ 10 Muharram 1448H

Day of Ashura.

This is the day upon which Allah ﷻ granted victory and relief to many of His Prophets (AS) after periods of hardship and trial, reminding us that Divine assistance always follows patience and steadfastness.

It is Sunnah to fast during the first 10 days of Muharram, especially on this day.

Hajja Rukiye Sultan said:

“The fast on the Day of Ashura gives whoever is fasting lots of thawab (reward), that whoever fasts takes the reward of a thousand hajjs and thousand umrahs and is given the reward of a thousand martyrs (shaheed).

Taken from Yawm Ashuraa – The Day of Ashura by Hjh Rukiye Sultan

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, 28th to 30th June 2026/ 13 to 15 Muharram 1448H

These days are known as the White Days, during which it is Sunnah to fast.

This practice is traced back to Sayyidina Adam (AS). After he began eating the food of this world, his skin darkened from the radiance it once had in Jannah. He asked Sayyidina Jibril (AS) how to remove this darkness, and he was taught to fast three days each month.

You may also make intention to combine this fast with any qadha (missed) fasts you may have.

For Sunnah fasts, the intention may be made anytime during the day. The Prophet ﷺ used to return home after Fajr prayers, and if no food was found at home, he would then make the intention to fast.

Sunday, 28th June 2026/ 13 Muharram 1448H

Night of 14th Muharram.

After Maghrib will be the night preceding the blessed birthday of Imamul Tariqah, Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Baha’uddin Shah Naqshbandق.

Shah Naqshbandق made this duʿa,
“O my Lord ﷻ, do not let any one who takes me as a guide and those who came after me or before me, exist without support from You ﷻ.”

All the angels of the skies said, “Ameen”.

Grandshaykhق said the barakah of that duʿa appears four times a year, and its protection is sent to the followers of Shah Naqshbandق four times a year.

✦ 14th of Muharram, on Shah Naqshbandق’s birthday
✦ on the 1st day of Ramadhan
✦ the 15th of Ramadhan
✦ and Laylatul Qadr

Therefore, the barakah of this duʿa descends on this night, and we should ask to be given a share of it.

It is encouraged for us to congregate for Khatamul Khwajagan and Zikir, recite Mawlid Nabi ﷺ in dedication to him, and read excerpts of his blessed life.

Shaykh Adnan Kabbaniق also advised that this is a highly significant night filled with Divine blessings, and that we should make abundant duʿas, especially in the time before Fajr during tahajjud.

Monday, 29th June 2026/ 14 Muharram 1448H

14th of Muharram, the Mawlid of Imamul Tariqah, Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Baha’uddin Shah Naqshbandق.

Grandshaykh Abdullah ad-Dagestaniق used to offer Qurban (animal sacrifice) on this day, as a sign of gratefulness for being guided by a Murshid and connected as followers of Shah Naqshbandق in the Naqshbandi Aliyyah Way.

He would then distribute the meat to the poor and needy.

Tuesday, 30th June 2026/ 15 Muharram 1448H

Night of 16th Muharram Mawlid of Shaykh Jamaluddin al-Ghumuki al-Husayniق, the 35th Grandshaykh of the Golden Chain.

Wednesday, 1st July 2026/ 16 Muharram 1448H

Night of 17th Muharram Urs of Shaykh Muhammad Effendi al-Yaraghiق, the 34th Grandshaykh of the Golden Chain.

Thursday, 2nd July 2026/ 17 Muharram 1448H

The best days to perform Hijama (cupping) therapy, according to the Sunnah, are the 17th, 19th, and 21st of the Hijri month. It is even more beneficial when these days fall on a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday.

Therefore, for the month of Muharram, the best days are Thursday, the 17th of Muharram (2nd July) and Monday, the 21st of Muharram (6th July).

Cupping is a cure for many illnesses and an important Sunnah to practise. For those in good health, doing it once a year is sufficient.

Important: Never perform cupping on Wednesdays or Saturdays, as this brings more harm than benefit according to a Hadith.

Friday, 3rd July 2026/ 18 Muharram 1448H

Night of 19th Muharram Urs of Khwaja Darwish Muhammadق, the 22nd Grandshaykh of the Golden Chain.

Monday, 6th July 2026/ 21 Muharram 1448H

Second day for Hijama (cupping) this month.

Thursday, 9th July 2026/ 25 Muharram 1448H

Night of 26th Muharram Martyrdom of Imam Ali Zainul Abideenر, son of Imam Hussainر.

May Allah ﷻ bless us with goodness in the coming year, ease our affairs, accept our worship, keep us in the company of the sincere, and grant us steadfastness upon the path of haqq.

Ya Muqallib al-Qulub, thabbit qulubana ʿala dinik

(O Turner of Hearts, keep our hearts firm upon Your religion)

May He ﷻ grant us victory over shaytan and our ego, and may He ﷻ send the Owner of the Time soon.

Ameen.

This guide has been compiled from the teachings of our beloved Sheikh, the late Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Sattar Khan, whose legacy continues at our Zawiyah at A’Posh Bizhub, Singapore, through his representatives, Sidi Shalihin, Ismail, and Syed Muhammad, who humbly carry forward the Naqshbandi path he laid with love and adab.

It also encompasses the teachings of great masters such as Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilaniق, Mawlana Shaykh Nazimق, Mawlana Shaykh Muhammadق, Shaykh Adnan Kabbaniق, Shaykh Raja Ashman Shahق, various classical and contemporary kitabs along with the writings of Awliya and scholars of the Naqshbandi Way.

As such, it is intended as a comprehensive guide to the devotions one may practice in these blessed months.

However, as Mawlanaق has often reminded us, any form of worship is accepted by Allah ﷻ, no matter how small. We should always strive to do good, even in small amounts, for what matters most is sincerity and consistency.

One should not feel disheartened or overwhelmed and abandon worship altogether. No matter the measure of our deeds, our duty is to keep striving to improve in this beautiful Way. We are truly blessed to have Mawlanaق’s guidance always.

We pray this guide brings benefit, provides clarity, and supports you on your journey.

We seek forgiveness for any shortcomings or errors.
