Mawlana Sheikh Muhammad Adilق said:
“In the month of Muḥarram, the Prophets reached their ranks or Prophethood was granted to them. Similarly, the ‘awliyā’ were given the ranks of sainthood on the day of ‘Āshūrā’, on the tenth of Muḥarram. On that day, there were many incidents… The most events have happened on this day; very beautiful events have happened.”
– Taken from Āshūrā’, a Gift from Allāh ﷻ
This guide is the second in our Muharram Series, following Guide to Shahrullah al-Muharram.
The Day of Ashura is a very important day not to be missed, as it commemorates the Divine support, deliverance, and relief granted by Allah ﷻ to many of His Prophets (AS) after periods of hardship and trial.
Mawlanaق also reminded us in his recent sohbah, that spending this blessed day in worship, duʿa, and prayer is certainly for our benefit, both in this world and the Hereafter.
InsyaAllah, the Day of Ashura will be on Thursday, 25th June 2026. Do note that the Night of Ashura begins on Wednesday, 24th June 2026 after Maghrib, and should also be spent wisely.
*Dates may vary from country to country depending on local moon sightings. Kindly follow your local authority where applicable.
*For simplicity and consistency, the dates mentioned here follow Mawlanaق’s calendar.
Wednesday, 24th June 2026/ 9 Muharram 1448H
Eve of Ashura.

Mawlana Sheikh Muhammad Adilق said, we should fast either on the 9th and 10th, or 10th and 11th Muharram. The best would be from 9th to 11th Muharram. Sohbah can be found here.
Night of 10th Muharram –
- Night preceding the Martyrdom of Imam Hussainر, beloved Grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, and members of his Holy Family and Companions.
- Urs of Shaykh Abu al-Hassan al-Kharqaniق, the 7th Grandshaykh of the Golden Chain.
- Mawlid of Shaykh Ahmad al-Faruqi as-Sirhindiق, the 25th Grandshaykh of the Golden Chain.
After Asar, approximately an hour before Maghrib, do recite the blessed names of the Martyrs of Karbala. Connecting to them for their Madad and Himmah.
We are highly encouraged to spend the night in vigil, as this is the Night of Ashura.
In his book, Sheikh Adnan Kabbaniق recommended sitting facing the Qiblah about an hour before Maghrib and completing the daily Adab of Tariqah. Thereafter, make Tawassul (spiritual connection) through Sayyidina al-Husaynر and the Martyrs of Karbala.
After breaking your fast, dedicate the prayers, awrad, and litanies you have performed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Hajja Rukiye Sultan said:
“The fast on the Day of Ashura gives whoever is fasting lots of thawab (reward), that whoever fasts takes the reward of a thousand hajjs and thousand umrahs and is given the reward of a thousand martyrs (shaheed).“
– Taken from Yawm Ashuraa – The Day of Ashura by Hjh Rukiye Sultan
We should also make duʿa fervently for ourselves, our loved ones, the Ummah of Rasulullah ﷺ, and our Shuyukh.
As Mawlanaق reminded us, these holy days are among the times when duʿas are accepted. We should therefore make abundant duʿa, especially in these times of widespread calamities, illnesses, trials, and fitnah.
Below are some Virtuous Deeds recommended for the Eve and Day of Ashura, taken from Sufficient Provision for Seekers of the Path of Truth (Al-Ghunya li-Talibi Tariq al-Haqq), Volume Three, by Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Jilaniق.

As narrated by Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Jilaniق:
- *Staying up in worship on the Night of Ashura
Allah ﷻ will allow them to live as long as they wish.
Do note that the Night of Ashura is the night preceding the Day of Ashura. Hence, this year it falls on Wednesday, 24th June 2026.
- Worshipping during the Night of Ashura and fasting the Day
The person will not feel the agony of death.
- Performing Ghusl (ritual bath)
If a person takes a ritual bath on the Day of Ashura, they will be protected from illness for the rest of the year, except for the illness of death.
- Applying kohl (ithmid, collyrium, chelak) to the eyes
The person will be protected from eye inflammation for the whole year.
- Performing Solatul Ashura and Solatul Khusoma
Allah ﷻ will forgive fifty years of past sins and fifty years of future sins. Allah ﷻ will also build for them, in the midst of the heavenly host, a thousand Palaces of Light.
- Visiting a sick person
It is as if they had visited all the children of Adam (AS).
- Giving water to the thirsty
It is as if they had never disobeyed Allah ﷻ for a single instant.
- Feeding a fasting believer
It will be just as if the entire Ummah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had broken fast as their guests, and had filled their stomachs to capacity.
- Spending generously on one’s family (within means)
Allah ﷻ will treat that person with special generosity throughout the rest of that year.
- Stroking the head of an orphan
For every hair touched on the orphan’s head, Allah ﷻ will raise the person one degree in Paradise.
In another narration by Sheikh Genoun, from Acts of Devotion, by Sidi Idris b. Muhammad al-Iraqi:
- Whoever recites the following seventy (70) times on the Day of Ashura, Allah ﷻ will forgive him:
حَسْبُنَا اللهُ وَنِعْمَ الوَكِيلُ وَنِعْمَ المَوْلَى وَنِعْمَ النَّصِيرُ
“Hasbunallahu Wa Ni’mal Wakeel, Ni’mal Maula Wa Ni’man Naseer”
“Allah ﷻ is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Guardian; The Excellent Protector and The Excellent Helper.”
- Whoever places some rosewater in a container on the Day of Ashura, and, while looking at it, he recites Surah Al-Fatiha 7 times. Then, he wipes his head and face with it and does the same for his loved ones, it will be a protection from every ailment, illness or similar afflictions for the coming year.
Recommended Devotions on the Day of Ashura (PDF here):

① Fasting the Day of Ashura
As Mawlanaق taught us, best is to fast either on the 9th and 10th, 10th and 11th or 9th to 11th Muharram.
“Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam said about the Day of ‘Ashūra that: we mustn’t fast for one day; the Jews fast for only one day. Therefore, in opposition to them, you can fast nine and ten, or ten and eleven, or nine, ten and eleven. Whoever wishes can fast all of them.”
② Taking full ablution with the intention of good health
Mawlanaق said:
“Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam also recommended taking a full ablution (ghusl). This way, one will regain health and spend the whole year in good health. This is very important, as there are many known and unknown illnesses in this time, may Allāh ﷻ protect us.”
③ Apply Kohl to the eyes
④ Buying provisions for the home
⑤ Give charity to family members and to the poor
In his recent Sohbahق, Mawlanaق reminded us to treat our families well, with kindness and generosity, especially on this day.
⑥ Surah Al-Ikhlas – 1,000 times
In Grandshaykhق’s book, it is mentioned that whoever recites Surah Al-Ikhlas one thousand times on the Day of Ashura, Allah Almighty will look upon them with the gaze of His Mercy and write them among the Siddiqqin (The Truthful).
This prayer is best done between Zuhur and Asar.
Make the intention for four raka‘at of Ashura Prayer (2 sets of 2 raka‘at).
In each rak‘ah, recite:
- Surah Al-Fatiha once
- Surah Al-Ikhlas eleven times
⑧ Recite Hasbunallahu Wa Ni’mal Wakeel – 70 times
After completing the prayer above and giving salam, recite “Hasbunallahu Wa Ni’mal Wakeel” seventy times.
The longer form may also be recited:
“Hasbunallahu Wa Ni’mal Wakeel, Ni’mal Maula Wa Ni’man Naseer”
“Allah ﷻ is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Guardian; The Excellent Protector and The Excellent Helper.”
⑨ Recite the Duʿa of Ashura – 7 times
Recite this duʿa seven times, anytime before sunrise and sunset of the Day of Ashura.
“Glorious is Allah ﷻ, as much as what is in His Great Scale, and as far as His knowledge extends, and to such a degree as it attains His pleasure, and to whatever weight may be His Throne; there is no refuge and no safety from Allah except in Him. Glorious is Allah, as many as there be perfect words of His. We ask of You for Safety, by Your Mercy, O You Who is the Most Merciful of Merciful. Sufficient for us is Allah, and the Best Disposer of affairs. There is no power and no strength except in Allah, the High, the Great! And He is the very best master and the very best help! May the grace of Allah be upon our Master Muhammad and upon his family and his companions.”
Further devotions for the Day of Ashura, which may be performed alongside the practices mentioned above:
In addition to the recommended practices mentioned above, we have also included an extended version which includes the teachings of Ghawth al-Aʿzam Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Jilaniق, Mawlana Sheikh Nazimق, and Sheikh Adnan Kabbaniق for those who wish to observe these optional practices.
⑪ La ilaha ilallah — 1,000 times
⑫ Salawat — 1,000 times
Allahumma salli ʿala Muhammadin wa ʿala ali Muhammadin wa sallim
⑬ Astaghfirullah — 100 to 1,000 times
⑯ Qurban (animal sacrifice)
Grandsheikh Abdullah al-Faiz ad-Dagestaniق would make Qurban of 2 sheep on this day and distribute the meat to the poor and needy.
May Allah ﷻ accept our worship, prayers, and good intentions, and grant us the relief, forgiveness, mercy, and blessings we seek on this blessed day.
May He ﷻ ease the sufferings of the Muslims, relieve those in hardship, grant victory to the oppressed, and replace every difficulty with ease and every sorrow with joy.
May He ﷻ protect us, our loved ones, and the Ummah of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ under His Divine Grace and Mercy, keep us steadfast upon the path of truth, and gather us in the company of the righteous in this world and the Hereafter.
Ameen.

This guide has been compiled from the teachings of our beloved Sheikh, the late Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Sattar Khan, whose legacy continues at our Zawiyah at A’Posh Bizhub, Singapore, through his representatives, Sidi Shalihin, Ismail, and Syed Muhammad, who humbly carry forward the Naqshbandi path he laid with love and adab.
It also encompasses the teachings of great masters such as Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilaniق, Mawlana Shaykh Nazimق, Mawlana Shaykh Muhammadق, Shaykh Adnan Kabbaniق, Shaykh Raja Ashman Shahق, various classical and contemporary kitabs along with the writings of Awliya and scholars of the Naqshbandi Way.
As such, it is intended as a comprehensive guide to the devotions one may practice in these blessed months.
However, as Mawlanaق has often reminded us, any form of worship is accepted by Allah ﷻ, no matter how small. We should always strive to do good, even in small amounts, for what matters most is sincerity and consistency.
One should not feel disheartened or overwhelmed and abandon worship altogether. No matter the measure of our deeds, our duty is to keep striving to improve in this beautiful Way. We are truly blessed to have Mawlanaق’s guidance always.
We pray this guide brings benefit, provides clarity, and supports you on your journey.
We seek forgiveness for any shortcomings or errors.
