Who’s the Wali of Allāh ﷻ?

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

أَلَا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

(Qur’ān 10:62)

“Alā inna awliyā’a Llāhi lā khawfun a’layhim wa-lā hum yaḥzanūn”

“Verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, “There is neither fear nor sorrow nor grief for the beloved servants of Allāh ﷻ.” Because they know that everything comes from Allāh ﷻ, they do not grieve or worry. They rely on Allāh ﷻ. They are the servants whom Allāh ﷻ loves; to be an ‘awliyā means to be a servant whom Allāh ﷻ loves. Everyone can be an ‘awliyā.

Sometimes people ask, “How do we become ‘awliyā?” If you are content with Allāh’s ﷻ decree and what He ﷻ bestows upon you, if you submit and accept that everything comes from Allāh ﷻ, Allāh ﷻ will make you one of His ﷻ beloved servants. To be a wali means to be His ﷻ beloved one.

That is, being an ‘awliyā does not necessarily mean performing miracles; it is not solely about that. As we said, if a person is obedient and content with what Allāh ﷻ gives them, and gives thanks to Him ﷻ, they become one of the people whom Allāh ﷻ loves, one of His ﷻ beloved servants.

If they constantly complain and are dissatisfied with everything, then they know for themselves. Such a person is constantly filled with anxiety and sorrow and can never be in a good state. The hardships endured will be in vain, and the things asked of Allāh ﷻ will not be fulfilled.

You should be grateful for what Allāh ﷻ has given. The greatest blessing is īmān. If you have īmān, the rest is easy. Of course, minor things happen; it’s human state; one can feel upset or sad. But instead of complaining about these things, knowing that they come from Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla brings comfort.

He will have made dhikr of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla – make dhikr means remembering Allāh ﷻ. Dhikr can be done with the tongue, but it can also be done through one’s state. Dhikr of state means remembering and mentioning Allāh ﷻ every second, every minute, knowing that everything comes from Allāh ﷻ.

Therefore, may Allāh ﷻ make us among His ﷻ beloved servants. Let this always be in our minds: everything people do happens by Allāh’s ﷻ will. Nothing done outside of that is accepted. Everything that Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla gives is a gift and beneficence from Him ﷻ. May Allāh ﷻ treat us with His ﷻ beneficence and not test us.

This is very important; never ask for tests. Sometimes people think tests are easy and ask for them to gain a higher rank; never ask for that. We are servants of His ﷻ beneficence. Tests are difficult for us. Do not ask for them, may Allāh ﷻ protect us, in shā’a Llāh.

May Allāh ﷻ always give us from His ﷻ beneficence. May He ﷻ make us all among His ﷻ beloved servants, in shā’a Llāh.
