Solar Eclipse Is by Divine Wisdom

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ دَائِبَيْنِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ

“Wa Sakhkhara Lakumu Ash-Shamsa Wa Al-Qamara Dā’ibayni ۖWa Sakhkhara Lakumu Al-Layla Wa An-Nahār”

“And He has made the sun and the moon, both constantly pursuing their courses, to be of service to you; and He has made the night and the day, to be of service to you.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has made the sun, moon, and stars subservient to humankind. This means they have an influence and wisdom on human lives. Nothing is created in vain.

Allāh ﷻ created this universe for humankind. Everything that happens is by the will and pleasure of Allāh ﷻ. Yesterday, we didn’t see it, but there was a solar eclipse elsewhere. A solar eclipse is a divine decree, a sign from Allāh ﷻ.

Of course, it has an effect; scientifically, they know it has an effect. It is known that such natural events affect the world and people. These things happen by the command of Allāh ﷻ; nothing happens by coincidence.

Sometimes people say, “A stone will fall from the sky, it will hit us, it just grazed us.” They don’t know, because they are those who lack faith. A person of faith knows that.

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has described the signs of the Day of Judgment in Qur’ān ‘Aẓīmu sh-Sha’n, and our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam has described them in his ﷺ ḥadīths. Everything will unfold accordingly.

However, to avoid such events and unfortunate situations, there are instructions and teachings from Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla and our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.

Prayers are performed during those times. Long surahs are recited in these prayers. But only in places where the eclipse is visible. There is no need to pray in places where it is not visible.

In places where the eclipse is visible, prayers are performed, tasbihāt and du’ā’s are recited until the sun or moon reappears. However, there is no need for this in places where it is not visible. Because that event is a sign for other places. They have states upon them.

These prayers and recitations of Surahs and so are for worshipping Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla and seeking His ﷻ grace and mercy to alleviate those states. Undoubtedly, these acts of worship will alleviate them. But if it is not recited, may Allāh ﷻ protect us, it becomes much more difficult.

Such situations are signs of the wisdom and majesty of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. Everything that happens in the universe—in the moon, the stars, the sky, and the earth—every minute, every second, happens by the will of Allāh ﷻ. They have their own wisdom.

People should not think that “We were created from nothing and that everything that happens is ordinary.” Certainly, nothing happens outside the will of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla.

Therefore, all of these are actually warnings for people. Allāh ﷻ does what He ﷻ wills. When He ﷻ wants, He ﷻ makes the middle of the day as dark as night. He ﷻ makes it cold in the middle of summer and hot in the middle of winter. All of this happens by the will and decree of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla.

Therefore, people of īmān must believe in this. Of course, there is also a scientific aspect to it, which is known through calculation and accounting. However, this knowledge is only found in those whom Allāh ﷻ has given knowledge to and taught.

Otherwise, not everyone knows how these things happen, how they come and go. Therefore, may Allāh ﷻ protect us and grant us what is best for us, in shā’a Llāh. May it be good, in shā’a Llāh, and may it be a means of good, in shā’a Llāh.
