How Did Our ‎Prophet ﷺ Live?

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

The miracles of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam are many. Everything he ﷺ said and did is Sunnah for us. Imitating him ﷺ and emulating him ﷺ earns a person reward in the sight of Allāh ﷻ. Thus, one’s rank is elevated.

Honoring our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam is obligatory for everyone. The more you honor our Holy ‎Prophet ﷺ, the more you will gain.

Sometimes you wonder, “How did our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam and his ﷺ companions live?” That’s why books are written; the life or attributes of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam; described under the title “Shamā’il al-Sharīf” (Noble Characteristics).

We heard a ḥadīth about this the other day. This ḥadīth is very significant. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, and the blessed Companions narrate: “We performed the Fajr prayer. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam ascended the pulpit. He ﷺ spoke until Dhuhr. He ﷺ spoke beautiful words,” they say.

They say, “At Dhuhr, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam descended from the pulpit. He ﷺ led Dhuhr prayer, then ascended the pulpit again and spoke until the Asr prayer. Beautiful words flowed from his ﷺ blessed mouth in the same way. At the time of the Asr prayer, he ﷺ descended and led the prayer. After that, he ﷺ ascended the pulpit again and spoke until Maghrib. After leading the Maghrib prayer, he ﷺ spoke in the same way until the ‘Isha prayer.”

When one hears this, one understands that an ordinary person could not do this. That is, there, in the presence of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, in those speeches, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam described everything from the beginning to the end of this world, everything that’s in the Hereafter.

The Companions say, “Those who could memorize it memorized it, and those who could remember it, remembered it.” Of course, Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla left what’s necessary in the minds of the Companions. He ﷺ explained and showed what’s unnecessary to be transmitted only so that those present could hear and witness the miracles.

Of course, during those hours, there was no food, no drink, nothing else. Simply because they were in the blessed presence of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, the Companions had no thoughts of food or drink in their minds.

At that time, being in the presence of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, the Companions needed nothing. Because that gathering was a spiritual gathering. All the worldly needs of the body were met by that spirituality.

Therefore, as we have said, the miracles of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam are numerous. This is one of those miracles. That beauty, being in the gathering of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, was superior to food, drink, and everything else. At the same time, prophethood means foretelling the future.

Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam described everything that will happen, from our days now to Paradise and Hell, one by one. Of course, if all of this had been written down at that moment, everything would have been clearly visible. But Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla reveals what He ﷻ wants to be known, and makes us forget what He ﷻ does not want to be known.

Shukr to Allāh ﷻ, everything that our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam told us is for our benefit and barakah; all his ﷺ words, ḥadīths, and actions are Sunnah.

Now, sometimes those who consider themselves clever come forward and say, “The Sunnah was like this, or like that; some things are Sunnah, some are not.” Everything that our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam said and did is Sunnah. How fortunate are those who can do them!

Because in the end of times, a person who performs the Sunnah will receive the reward of a hundred martyrs. Shayṭān does not want you to earn this reward. Therefore, he puts doubts into people’s minds, making them say, “This is Sunnah, this is not Sunnah.” Everything that our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam did is Sunnah. Imitating him ﷺ is a great gain.

May Allāh ﷻ grant us to follow that way. Our intention is to perform his ﷺ Sunnah as much as we can, in shā’a Llāh. May Allāh ﷻ accept it. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
