Why Fear Allāh ﷻ?

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوا وَّالَّذِينَ هُم مُّحْسِنُونَ

(Qur’ān 16:128)

‘Inna Llāha ma‘a lladhīna it-taqaw wa lladhīna hum muḥsinūn’

‘Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.’ Sadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says: “Allāh ﷻ is with those who fear Him ﷻ and those who do good.” If you wish to be with Allāh ﷻ, know that a person who fears Allāh ﷻ definitely does not do evil. A person who is ashamed before Allāh ﷻ does not do evil. A person who fears Allāh ﷻ does good.

“Muhsinīn” means those who do good. Allāh ﷻ loves them. The people He ﷻ loves are good people. They are the ones who have won; true humanity is in them. Do not look for humanity outside of them.

The more faithless a person is, the more harm they cause to others. The more faith a person has and the more they fear Allāh ﷻ, then they are not to be feared; only all kinds of goodness can be expected from them.

Therefore, the servants whom Allāh ﷻ loves are His ﷻ accepted servants. A person should always think about doing good. One should only harbor evil, envy, or hostility towards something for the sake of Allāh’s ﷻ pleasure.

That is, a person should love for the sake of Allāh’s ﷻ pleasure and hate for the sake of Allāh’s ﷻ pleasure. How to hate? It means disapproving of the evil deeds done.

One should make du’ā’ for the person, saying, “May Allāh ﷻ improve them,” but never approve of the evil deeds done. One should strive to stay away from evil deeds and not follow his ego.

The ego always inclines towards evil, towards all harmful and bad things. It is necessary to guide that inclination towards good. There is no other way; you must incline it.

It is not possible to say to the ego, “Come, I will do everything you want, and then you will follow me.” The more you do what the ego wants, the worse and more evil will come; there is no end to it. There is no end to the desires and greed of the ego.

Therefore, you must fear Allāh ﷻ. One must fear straying from the way of Allāh ﷻ. May Allāh ﷻ protect us. Because that is the most thing to fear. They ask, “Why fear Allāh ﷻ?” A person who fears Allāh ﷻ, as we said, can do all kinds of good.

Those who do not fear Allāh ﷻ can do all kinds of evil. When a person does not fear Allāh ﷻ, even the worst creature cannot be as bad as him. Because those who do not fear Allāh ﷻ are those who do not value human beings, who disregard them.

A person who fears Allāh ﷻ fears even harming an ant. May Allāh ﷻ make us among them. May He ﷻ make us among those who fear Allāh ﷻ, in shā’a Llāh. May He ﷻ make us among those who are on the right way, upon istiqāmah, in shā’a Llāh.
