A Believer Never Harms

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, “A believer neither harms nor reciprocates harm;” he does not cause harm to anyone. The nature and characteristic of a believer is to do good. Doing evil is not among the characteristics of a believer.

A Muslim is always obligated to do good. He stays away from doing evil and does not harm anyone. Whether it be a person, an animal, or a tree: he does not harm anything. He desires everything to be as Allāh ﷻ wills. This is the characteristic of a believer.

A non-believer, on the other hand, tends and intends to do evil out of envy, jealousy, or hostility. Therefore, there are limits set by Allāh ﷻ. Whoever transgresses those limits incurs Allāh’s ﷻ wrath. A person who incurs Allāh’s ﷻ wrath becomes someone whom Allāh ﷻ does not love.

In ṭarīqah, our entire purpose is to be a person whom Allāh ﷻ and our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam love. As we have said, this is achieved by always doing good without harming anyone. This is also an act of worship.

Every state and action of a believer, as long as it is done for the sake of Allāh ﷻ, is considered an act of worship and earns him reward. Reward is recorded for every step he takes, every breath he takes.

Therefore, may Allāh ﷻ not deprive us of the ability to do good. Some people are deprived of doing good and occupy themselves with doing evil. May Allāh ﷻ protect us from such people.

May we not follow our egos and not exceed our limits, in shā’a Llāh. May Allāh ﷻ protect Ummati Muhammad. Wa min Allāh at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
