Difficulty Distances People from Good

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

يَسِّرُوا ولا تُعَسِّرُوا

“Yassirū wa-lā Tu‘assiru”

“Make things easy and do not make them difficult”. [Hadith].

Make things easy, do not make them difficult. Show ease in your affairs, both for worldly matters and for the hereafter, so that things don’t become burdensome for people. What they consider difficult is actually easy, but it seems difficult to them. Worship seems difficult, doing good deeds seems difficult.

On the other hand, not performing worship, doing what they want according to their own minds and not doing what they don’t want, that seems easy for them. Many people are in this state, thinking to themselves, “This will do, nothing else is necessary.” Difficulty distances people from good.

Worldly affairs are the same way. If you are going to do something, do it easily, in the way that you know. If you are going to be with people, address them according to their states. If you address them with things they don’t understand, it will be difficult for them to understand you. When things get difficult, they distance themselves from you and do things according to their own minds.

Therefore, there must be ease. Ease in shopping and trade, ease within the family. Of course, with your children, in some situations you need to show them boundaries and what should be done. In other situations, it can be gentler.

Regarding prayer, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam said, “When a child turns seven, tell them to pray, and when they turn ten, they must pray.” That difficulty isn’t difficult; they learn gradually and continue on that way throughout their lives without leaving prayer. Fasting is the same way. All acts of worship are the same.

Getting along with people kindly, not lying, not harming or deceiving people; all these are considered good qualities and ease. The opposite: harming people, betraying trust, and other such things, are evil and create difficulties. Not giving back what you’ve received is difficulty. Not getting along within the family is also difficulty.

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla and Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam say that everything should be done with goodness and beauty. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam is an example for humanity; not just for Muslims, but for all of humanity. His ﷺ way is a beautiful way, the way of humanity, the way to happiness for humanity.

May Allāh ﷻ not separate us from this way, in shā’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
