Adab Is Only Found in Ṭarīqah

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

وَأَحْسِنُوا ۛ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

(Qur’ān 02:195)

“Wa ‘Ahsinū ‘Inna Allāha Yuĥibbu Al-Muĥsinīn”

“And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

“Do everything in the best way,” says Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla for He ﷻ loves those who do good. Ṭarīqah teach the most beautiful aspects of Islām. Those who follow the way of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla and our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, the way of ṭarīqah, become good people and form a beautiful community. That way is the way of Adab (good manners).

In the past, Adab was taught everywhere; in schools, and outside. Now, they teach lack of Adab and indecency. They used to have classes on “Adab al-Muashara”, “Ethics of Decent Behavior, Social Etiquette”, teaching how to behave, what to do, how to sit and stand. Now that’s gone, but such things are found only in ṭarīqah. And even that is incomplete; people still act according to their own minds.

One must know how to treat people, what to do and what not to do, how to sit and stand, how to come and go, with or without permission. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla taught all of this to our our Holy ‎Prophet ﷺ, and he ﷺ taught it to his ﷺ ummah. On this beautiful way, not only worship but also conduct is important. If actions, behaviors and states conform to the Sunnah of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, then there will be beauty among people, and Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla will reward them. They will receive merit and reward.

Now they talk about “Courtesy.” Courtesy, as the name suggests, means greatness. If a person behaves politely and with courtesy, they elevate their own status and rank, becoming great in the sight of Allāh ﷻ. If there is no Adab, if they don’t pay attention to how they sit and stand, and act according to their own minds, people will not respect them. They won’t like them, they won’t love them, they might even hate them.

Therefore, one must be careful. “Adab al-Muashara” are not shameful. People today consider it shameful. They advise people, “Act as you wish, don’t care about anything. Don’t respect anyone, don’t honor anyone, act as you please.” That’s how they teach; however, this is not Adab al-Muashara, it is lack of Adab. Lack of Adab is not a good thing. May Allāh ﷻ protect us.

The people of this time have a completely different state. Those old people are gone. In the past, there was respect, affection, and kinship. Now, nobody is aware of these values. Not only are they unaware, but they do the exact opposite. That’s why there is no peace. There is no affection among people. A bad way of life emerges.

However, a beautiful community, a beautiful society can be formed with Adab al-Muashara, good manners and by treating people kindly. May Allāh ﷻ guide people. May people learn good things, in shā’a Llāh. Goodness is attained through the way of the ṭarīqah, in shā’a Llāh.

May Allāh ﷻ help us all. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
