Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm: ‘يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ’, ‘Yā ‘Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna ‘Āamanū Lima Taqūlūna Mā Lā Taf`alūn’, ‘O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?’ (Qur’ān 61:02). Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm. Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is saying, “O believers, why are you saying what you do not do?” “We will do this. We will do that”. “Do what you can do. Don’t promise to do what you cannot do. Don’t tell people you will do it.”
They say they will do this and that and worship to Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. Do as much as you can. Even if little, do what you have promised in all aspects. We live for Akhirah and for Dunya. They are the same anyways. Akhirah and Dunya cannot be separate. As we live in Dunya, all our intentions must be for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ. Your work and efforts will be with Barakah, and you will attain Thawab.
So it should not be a burden to you. Don’t let your word be a burden to you so that you are not overwhelmed by it. Do what you must do or what is ordered. And don’t promise to do what you cannot do. Don’t give hope to people. Whoever it is, he must keep his promise. The religion of Islam is the religion of beauty. There are all kinds of beauty in it. And it is from manliness to keep the promise.
In the time we are living now, they are making people do the opposite. It means people see each other and imitate accordingly. They think it is something cool to give a word and not to keep it. Whereas a promise – Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla says keeping a promise is an attribute of good people. Such people are the greatest people of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla who are Prophets. And the greatest of them is our Holy Prophet salla Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Then come the Sahabah and believers, people on the way of Allah ﷻ. They follow this way.
Useless people are people who don’t keep their word. Therefore, may Allah ﷻ help us keep the word we give to Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla insha’Allah. Because as we said, we are living in such a time that it is unclear what might happen every minute. People are possessed by their egos and console themselves by saying, “I did another thing not to be ashamed because of this situation. I didn’t do this”. If they keep their promise, they will save their value. Otherwise, people who don’t keep their promise lose all their value. May Allah ﷻ make us firm towards our promise. May we not break our promise insha’Allah.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
