Guide to the Eclipse Prayer

On Sunday, 7th September 2025, there will be a full moon eclipse lasting from 11:28pm to 4:55am SGT.

The most ideal time to pray is when the eclipse is visible in the sky.

For those of us in Singapore, it will be between 01:30am to 02:52am SGT.

In his Sohbah below, Mawlana Sheikh Nazimق reminded us that eclipses are signs of impending calamity, and it is a significant Sunnah to perform the Eclipse Prayer (Salat al-Kusuf/Khusuf) during this time.

Different madhhabs may perform this prayer in slightly different ways, so follow the practice of your own madhhab.

UPDATE: A second eclipse, a partial solar eclipse will be occuring on 21st September 2025. For those in regions where it is visible, this guide remains applicable.

The only difference is that during this upcoming eclipse, the Imam should recite softly.

Guidance on the Eclipse:

Performing the Eclipse Prayer:

Note: For Sunday, 21st September 2025, Imam should recite softly.

How to Pray?

  • Each rakaat has 2 ruku‘ (bowings).
  • Recite long surahs if possible.
  • The ruku‘ and sujud should also be lengthened. Instead of 3 tasbihs, up to 100 tasbihs may be recited.

After the Prayer:

  • Recite Astaghfirullah Al-Adheem wa atubu ilayh 100 times.
  • Make du‘a for protection for ourselves and the entire Ummah
  • Give charity.

Sohbah on the Importance of this Prayer:

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim’sق Suhbah

Eve of the Lunar Eclipse, 15 June 2011

The prayer is quite long, sometimes lasting between thirty minutes to an hour. However, due to our condition¹, we offer a shorter prayer symbolically, in honour of the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ, peace and blessings be upon him.

I assign my grandson², Haji Mehmet Nazimق, to be the Imam. With Allah’s ﷻ permission, he is pure, and may we be forgiven through his blessings.

Tonight, the eclipse will be a powerful apparition from which we may draw strength.

There is a lesson in it for us. When darkness begins to appear, our power is taken away. When the skies clear again, that power is returned to us, and Allah ﷻ grants us even more strength than before.

When we pray, we receive from Allah’s ﷻ light, the very light that sustains the moon, both in a physical and spiritual form.

Clothing us in sweetness and honour, it heals, removing the burdens of the faithful, and revives us. When the skies clear, that light returns to us, lifting illnesses and troubles from our shoulders.

O Muslims! Take good care, for Allah ﷻ creates such moments to relieve you of your burdens. Seize this opportunity as a treasure, and at the very least, pray 2 rakaats.

We hope that Allah ﷻ will bring an end to this period of tyranny on the earth with this sign in the sky.

Remember, oppression is temporary. Reality is light, yet darkness overtook it. Islam came with light to extinguish the tyrants, dictators and ignoramuses. Their darkness has covered us, but darkness does not last forever.

This sign shows that oppression must come to an end, that the age of tyrannical rule is nearing its close, just as light follows darkness. Imam Mahdi (AS) will come with light.

[After explaining how to perform the Eclipse Prayer]

“Whoever performs this prayer will not face troubles in this year, and if any troubles appear, they will not truly touch them. Understand this well… if they perform this prayer, their burdens will be lifted.

Through this prayer, the sick are granted health, the heedless are given reason, wisdom increases, faith is strengthened, and physical power is granted to the weak. We are revived with a fresh energy. Its benefits are endless, beyond what words can fully describe.

Footnotes:

¹ Mawlana Shaykh Nazimق was already praying seated by this time due to old age.

² Shaykh Mehmet Adilق was in Istanbul, so Shaykh Nazimق instructed Shaykh Mehmet Nazimق, to lead the prayer.

Al-Fatiha.

Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Haqqaniق

15 June 2011 / 13 Rajab 1432 AH

May Allah ﷻ accept our prayers, forgive our shortcomings, and protect us from every trial and calamity.

May He lift the burdens from the Ummah, grant health to the sick, strength to the weak, and light to the hearts of the faithful.

May He clothe us in His mercy and honour, lift oppression from this earth, and hasten the relief that will come with the appearance of Sayyidina Mahdi (AS).

Ameen, ya Rabb.

Sohbah on the Eclipse Prayer by Hajja Rukiye Sultan here.

This post was prepared by the SufiHub Team in honour of our beloved Sheikh, the late Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Sattar Khan, who devoted himself with love to transcribing and summarising the daily sohbahs of Mawlana Sheikh Nazimق.

Through this blessed service, he began his journey on the Way in 2008 and remained steadfast upon it until his final breath in 2023. Today, his legacy lives on at our Zawiyah at A’Posh Bizhub Singapore, through his representatives Sidi Shalihin, Ismail, and Syed Muhammad, who humbly continue the path he sincerely paved.

We pray that our dear Sheikh Abdul Sattar has been reunited with his beloved Mawlana Sheikh Nazimق and all our Grandshaykhs, and that their light continues to guide us always upon the way of Haqq.

If you wish to share any of our resources on your platforms, kindly post it in full and ensure that proper credit is given to all its sources. For this is adab, the very core of our beautiful religion and way.
