Don’t Imitate Like a Flock

Bismillahir-rahmanir-rahim

Our Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم says,

مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ

“Man tashabbaha bi qawmin fahuwa minhum”.

Whoever wants to imitate people or a nation, he is from them.

Sometimes people do unnecessary things without realizing. Everyone is wearing the same clothes now. That is another matter. But there is a more useless thing like the New Year. They decorate here and there. This is something totally useless and has no benefit. It removes Barakah, peace and Iman. That is the tradition of pagans, not even Christians.

They added it in Christianity. But it has nothing to do with Christianity. Muslims think something of it and make decorations too. So why is your decoration? Are you getting married? Or is the house getting married? It is something that has nothing to do with logic.

We see they do it every year. Who does it keeps himself busy for nothing. If it had little benefit, we’d say you did well. But no, there is no benefit but only loss. People think something of it, and others want to imitate them. They try to do the same everywhere. What is its benefit? Will it bring back the last year? Will it bring back your lost days? Or will there be benefit for the new year? Not at all. Allah جل جلاله has given mind and understanding to people. But what they do is a useless waste of money, useless work.

They shouldn’t do so. They should do useful things. There are a thousand beneficial things they can do instead. There are a thousand beautiful things to do. They must be busy with them.

People say look at yourself. Indeed, people must look at themselves. They must think if what they are doing is good or bad. They should not look at their faces or appearances.

They must look if what they are doing is useful or not. People must always look at themselves, control themselves and control their egos. If people imitate each other like a flock, they should not wish to do everything together. If an animal from the flock jumps off a cliff, they all jump after him. So a hundred, five hundred animals perish all at once. Imitating them is not a clever thing.

Animals don’t have mind. But we are given mind by Allah جل جلاله. Allah جل جلاله tells us to use our minds. May Allah جل جلاله help us. May He جل جلاله wake people up from heedlessness. May they not do useless things insha’Allah.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
