Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

“يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَن تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ”
(Qur’ān 49:06)
“Yā ayyuhā lladhīna āmanū in jā’akum fāsiqun binabain fatabayyanū an tuṣībū qawman bijahālatin fatuṣbiḥū ‘alā mā fa‘altum nādimīn”
“O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.
Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, if you heard any news, if you heard anything, research it thoroughly, lest it be wrong, lest they have given false news. Or else if you do something, you will regret it, He ﷻ says. That’s why, everything that is going to be done must be researched thoroughly; your own matter, someone else’s matter, the community’s matter, the ṭarīqah’s matter and every matter. After you’re really sure, you tell people this and that. Then, there will be no responsibility upon you.
In the matter of ṭarīqah, people come to ṭarīqah for the sake of Allāh ﷻ. They find a door so that they can stay away from dunyā. They come to embrace that door. After that, because those who come are pure, because they come with pure intentions, sometimes they come across ignorant people inside. They think they are something, and they go after them. Whereas it is necessary to ask and investigate. But those people are not at fault. Because they came since it is the door of Allāh ﷻ. They came to the dergah. They came to the madrasah. They came to the mosque. This is a place for the sake of Allāh ﷻ. No [badness] is done there. It may happen. It happens there too. It happens everywhere. They do the most in the holiest place, in Kaaba, Masjid al-Haram. Every good deed is rewarded a hundred thousand times there. And the sin’s punishment is also a hundred thousand times there. They are stealing during tawāf near Al-Ḥajar Al-Aswad (the Black Stone). They steal people’s money. That’s what happens there. And it happens in dergahs too.
So when one comes to the dergah, he shouldn’t say they did something. People must look after their safety: Who is this person? What is he like? What is he doing there? Is his word trustworthy, or is he not trustworthy? One should investigate about him so that there can be benefit. We are also here for the benefit of everyone. We are here for the sake of Allāh ﷻ. We are ordered to be here. We feel sad when those people come. We feel sad when people listen to such ones with bad intentions or evil intentions, people who are not of sound mind, and go another way. That’s why, from time to time we warn people. We also name them to expose them for people to be protected. It’s for them to protect themselves.
There is taqdīr (appreciate), and there is tekdīr (scold). Those who don’t understand with appreciation must be scolded. Taqdīr is to explain it to them with good words. And when they don’t understand, you should explain it with bad words. You must punish them so that no harm touches the people who come. Everything is allowed for the benefit of people. In sharī’ah there is punishment, and there is reward also. That’s why, these guys’ pictures and names are put outside, here and there. That’s not something we are happy about or we like. We are obliged to do those things so that this guy doesn’t get harmed: so that he doesn’t harm someone else and commits a sin. And so that people don’t get harmed. That’s why, we have to be careful. When you enter a dergah, you must pay attention to whom a person is and what he’s like, so that no harm is done while hoping for benefit. This is an important thing.
In the time of our Holy Prophet ﷺ, Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla – There weren’t such people in Mecca. Because Mecca was a difficult place. When they came to Medina, there were many hypocrites. If the hypocrite wasn’t a Muslim, trouble would be upon him. But those who appear to be Muslims are the enemies of Islām. They are the enemies. That’s why, there were such people. And there is as such in every time. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu alayhi wa sallam knew them. Most of the ṣaḥābah knew them too. They would sometimes say their names and sometimes wouldn’t. Their states are also mentioned in Qur’ān ‘Aẓīmu sh-Sha’n. That’s why, it was also said to the ṣaḥābah so that they would be careful.
Therefore, you have to be careful in dergahs. There can be hypocrites. There can be foolish ones. There can be idiots. There can be people with bad intentions. That’s why, you have to ask and investigate when you come. You must stay away from these people. If it wasn’t harmful, we wouldn’t say this today. But there are many harmful things that most people do. And they don’t understand with advice either. They don’t understand with anything. So be careful. May Allāh ﷻ protect us. May Allāh ﷻ reform these people. This is ṭarīqah. People come here to reform themselves. And some come to corrupt it. May Allāh ﷻ help us.
We will tell the truth. We will tell what’s right. We will not be offended by anyone. We will not fear anyone. Therefore, may Allāh ﷻ help us. Allāh ﷻ is with the truth. The one with bad intentions: ‘وَلَا يَحِيقُ الْمَكْرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِ’, ‘Wa Lā Yaĥīqu Al-Makru As-Sayyi’u ‘Illā Bi-‘ahlihi, ‘But the evil plot does not encompass except its own people.’ (Qur’ān 35:43). Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla is saying. The plots of the person with bad intentions will reverse on him. His badness will reverse upon him. May Allāh ﷻ reform him so that it does not reverse on him. May he repent and ask forgiveness, in shā’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.
