What Is Precious for Allāh ﷻ

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ

(Qur’ān 49:13). ‘Yā ‘Ayyuhā n-Nāsu ‘Innā Khalaqnākum Min Dhakarin Wa ‘Untha Wa Ja’alnākum Shu’ūbāan Wa Qabā’ila Lita’ārafū Inna ‘Akramakum Inda Allāhi ‘Atqākum’, ‘O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.’

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says in Qur’ān ‘Aẓīmu sh-Shān, “We created you in different races and in different nations”. Your colors are different. Your languages are different. Your looks are different. That difference is not important. In the presence of Allāh ﷻ, no one is superior over others. Compared to other people, everyone is the same in the presence of Allāh ﷻ. As Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla is not in need of anything, there is nothing like “I should make this one higher, or I should make this one more valuable” in the presence of Allāh ﷻ.

Who is valuable in the presence of Allāh ﷻ? Pious ones. People who fear from Allāh ﷻ and obey Allāh ﷻ. That is the acceptable. They can be white or black. They can be whatever they are, arabs or non-arabs. People who are good servants to Allāh ﷻ are the accepted and valuable ones in the presence of Allāh ﷻ.

Certainly, among mankind there are various people. They have different looks. But what they do – There are some people who have the characteristics of animals. What is the quality of animals? Some of them are dangerous. Some are slow and others not. The characteristics of people are like this.

Mawlana Shaykh ‘Abdu Llāh ad-Dāghistānī one day told Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim, “Let us go for a ride”. His house was on the mountains, on mount Qāsiyūn. Damascus is in lowlands. And there is a mountain behind it. Our dergah, our house, the dergah of Mawlana Shaykh ‘Abdu Llāh were there. His house was also close to there. When it was necessary, they came down. They came down by a wisdom in order to show something. He said “I will take you for a ride around Damascus”. They went to Damascus. When they came down, he said, “Shaykh Nāẓim, look at them. All of them are going in crowd. Look now”. He looked, there were no people. Each of them was a different animal. Some were wolves, some were dogs, some were donkeys, somes were snakes, some were scorpions etc. He asked “How is this? Where did the people go?” He said, “These are the people. I showed you their characters. If their characters are not trained, they are like animals”. The character of people’s egos is like that of animals. Until they reach the human character the ego must be trained. People must correct themselves so that they have human characteristic.

The human characteristic is the most perfect characteristic in the presence of Allāh ﷻ. It is the best. They have high ranks. ‘وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ’, ‘Wa Laqad Karramnā Banī ‘Ādam, ‘And We have certainly honored the children of Adam.’ (Qur’ān 17:70). Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘aẓīm. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, “We have increased mankind to the highest rank”. But if they put themselves to the characteristic of animals, they lose humanity then. They decrease themselves. They put themselves down. People lose that favour and honor then.

Therefore, as Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla said in Qur’ān ‘Aẓīmu sh-Shān, the most virtuous among you is not the richest, the most beautiful, or the most powerful but the most pious one who obeys Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. He is the valuable one. He is the true human. May Allāh ﷻ increase all of us to that rank inshā’aLlāh together with the Mashāyikh. Because whoever is with them must be a human, as they train him and increase him together with them with the permission of Allāh ﷻ.
