Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Mawlānā Sheikh ‘Abdu Llāh ad-Dāghestānī used to tell Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim to write down his Sohbahs. The first lesson in ṭarīqah is: “الطَّرِيقَةُ كُلِّهَا آدَاب,” “At-ṭarīqah Kulluha ‘Adaab.” Ṭarīqah is based upon adab (good manners).
A person who doesn’t behaves with adab should not say, “I am from ṭarīqah.” You are like an ordinary person from the street. So, those who do not respect others, do not respect their elders, do not show kindness to their relatives, do not show kindness to their neighbors are not considered from ṭarīqah.
Ṭarīqah, as we said, is adab. It is based upon good manners. In terms of adab, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam is the greatest example. The most perfect of all people’s adab is our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam’s. The people of ṭarīqah must follow him ﷺ and go on his ﷺ way.
Therefore, in ṭarīqah, engaging in such evil, lies and falsehood is not from adab. Adab is obedience to the command, obedience to the command of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla, and going on the way of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. It is nothing else.
People today find something and try to engage in indecency. That was the way of ordinary people, but not of ṭarīqah.
Ṭarīqah is to emulate our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam’s perfect character and to imitate him ﷺ. May Allāh ﷻ help us. Because the people of ṭarīqah everywhere cannot control their ego. They do whatever their ego desires. They are people who follow whatever their ego wants.
Therefore, what is ṭarīqah like? Ṭarīqah disciplines. You must discipline your ego. The disciplined ego will make you rise to the highest ranks then. There is no other way; you will not get anywhere by shouting, screaming, or being rude. Not only you will fail to advance but you will regress.
May Allāh ﷻ protect us from the evils of our ego. They ask, “What should we do in ṭarīqah?” Ṭarīqah is to have adab. That most important thing is to preserve your manners. Knowing what you have done, what you have acted, and what you have spoken.
May Allāh ﷻ help us all, grant us ease, and not make us conform to our egos. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.
