The Adab of Ḥajj

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

“وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا”

(Qur’ān 03:97)

“Wa li-Llāhi a’la n-nāsi hijju l-bayti man i-statā’a ‘ilayhi sabīlā”

“And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House (Ka’bah) – those who can afford the journey.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

Trips to ḥajj have started. It happens to whomever Allāh ﷻ grants it. Because it is always difficult to go to ḥajj. And it is difficult in this time too; going there, being able to enter, reaching there. They used to go with camels or on foot in old times. That was difficult. Even now, when everything is much easier, it is difficult to enter there. That is the wisdom of Allāh ﷻ.

Everyone should intend for ḥajj. Who can should make intention so that the liability of this farḍ is lifted from them. Those who go should keep the adab of that place, adab of ḥajj and perform sunnah, mustaḥabb, wājib and farḍ as much as they can. Because that has become another problem. People go to ḥajj, but they cannot do anything from sunnah. And wājib is either done, or not done.

Therefore, when people have the chance to go to ḥajj, they must pay attention to this. What is wājib must be done. When they can’t do it, if it is their fault, they will be punished. But when it happens because others don’t allow it, they must ask for forgiveness from Allāh ﷻ. They must repent by saying “I wanted to do it, but they didn’t let me.” In shā’a Llāh they won’t be liable then.

Then, they perform ḥajj. They make tawāf. The most important thing when ḥajj is over is to not stand in vain. They should pray all of the five prayers in Ka‘bah. Because it is Masjid al-Ḥarām. Masjid al-Ḥarām means the surroundings of Ka‘bah, its territory and the mosque. People there are even questioning that. They say Masjid al-Ḥarām is all of Makkah. That is not right. Makkah is different. And Masjid al-Ḥarām is different.

There are many mosques in Makkah. But Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says “Masjidi hādhā”. “This is My mosque” about it. He ﷻ doesn’t say “Baladi hādhā”. He ﷻ doesn’t say “This is My city.” He ﷻ says this mosque. Therefore, a prayer made in that mosque is equivalent to 100,000 prayers. If you pray five times a day; 100,000 each, it is as if you pray 500,000 times. If you pray for ten days, it is like 5 million prayers. You can’t pray 5 millions times in your life.

Therefore, we must pay attention to that. We must not miss it. Because there is not such a chance. It is difficult to go there. It is not easy. Therefore, we must be careful. And second, there is the mosque of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam there. It is easier there. Going there and praying the five prayers is easy. It is built wide and large. They can pray there. And that’s equivalent to 1,000 prayers.

It is as if you make 5,000 prayers in a day and 50,000 prayers in ten days. The worship performed in ten days is as much as it would take you in many years. They won’t let you stay for ten days there. But the more you can do from nāfilah, ṣadaqah and everything, all of them are 1,000 times more virtuous than in other places. They are both virtuous and have 1,000 times more thawāb.

Rather than having worldly conversation, making more tasbihat, reading Qur’ān, or helping others, or asking questions will make you gain more knowledge there. Sitting in the presence of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, every minute of it you are washed in that mercy and barakah of this holy place.

Sitting close to the most beloved of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla, to our Holy Prophet ﷺ is the never-ending mercy and the means to mercy. May Allāh ﷻ give it to everyone. And may He ﷻ help those who can’t go so that they go in shā’a Llāh. May the door open so you enter, in shā’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
