Oppressors Suffer Here and Hereafter

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

(وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ (17) أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ (18

(Qur’ān 90:17-18)

‘Wa tawāṣaw biṣ-ṣabri wa tawāṣaw bil-marḥamah (17) Ūlā’ika aṣḥābu al-maymanah (18)’

And they enjoined one another to patience and enjoined one another to mercy. They are those on the Right Hand, the dwellers of Paradise.’ Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

Patience and mercy are the attributes of a good Muslim, a believer. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla loves them. Allāh ﷻ will show mercy to those who are merciful. Those who are not merciful will surely suffer their punishment.

In these days we live in, of course, there was and is a great deal of oppression. Since the very beginning, after they overthrew the Ottoman Caliph, oppression has reached its highest levels in the whole world.

They deceived people by saying, “We will save you from Ottoman oppression.” Not just here, but the entire world has been plagued by oppression. After they removed the ones who ruled with mercy, millions were massacred, killed, and wronged.

Why? Because a Muslim is merciful. He has compassion. They advise one another to have patience and mercy. They advise each other not to oppress. The disbeliever is the opposite. However much oppression there is, the disbeliever has it.

Therefore, the Muslim is the beloved servant of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. He ﷻ honors him and rewards him. And He ﷻ holds both oppressors and disbelievers accountable. They should not rejoice because the reckoning didn’t happen in this world.

Indeed, the oppressor will have a reckoning in the Hereafter. And in dunyā, Allāh ﷻ will set a fire within him, leaving him restless. No matter how much he does, that fire doesn’t leave him. If he’s drinking alcohol, taking drugs, committing all kinds of infamy—it will still be of no benefit. That fire will never leave him.

Therefore, the state of this world is like this. Everything is for the benefit of the Muslim. Nothing is for his evil. No matter how much oppression there is, believers and Muslims will be rewarded in the Hereafter for by Allāh ﷻ.

In the Hereafter, Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla will reward them for what they’ve endured here. People will say, “If only we had suffered like this.”

May Allāh ﷻ not make us oppressors, in shā’a Llāh. May we not oppress anyone, in shā’a Llāh.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
