Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem
Ramaḍān is almost over now. More than half of it is over. It has its worship, one of which is i‘tikāf. I‘tikāf means spending the last ten days of Ramaḍān in a mosque or a place where it is prayed five times a day. It is a sunnah of our Holy Prophet ﷺ. It must be made at least by one person in a country so that the barakah comes in shā’a Llāh.
Our Holy Prophet ﷺ never skipped it. Even once he ﷺ was occupied with something, I don’t remember it now. So he ﷺ did it twice that year. He ﷺ did his missed ten days first. And then he ﷺ did it normally after the 20th.
Certainly, i‘tikāf must be made for ten days. However, people may do it less; as much as they can. When entering a mosque or a masjid, they write above the door, “Nawaytu sunnata l-I‘tikāf”. Which means, “I make intention to make i‘tikāf.” You attain its thawāb then. I‘tikāf can be made any time of the year. But the best is to follow the sunnah of our Holy Prophet ﷺ and make it in the last ten days [of Ramadan] for those who can do so.
For men, it is made in a mosque, in a masjid or in a dergah where they pray the five times. They must not talk about worldly things but perform worship. As for eating, eat normally. It is not like in the 40-day Khalwa (seclusion). They can have saḥūr and eat in the evening. And there is permission to eat anything they like. There is no limitation. It has a great virtue in the presence of Allāh ﷻ. It is very blessed for those who can make it.
Shukr to Allāh ﷻ, they make it all over the world. In Masjidu l-Ḥarām, Masjidu l-Aqṣa, Masjidu n-Nabawī, the mosque of our Holy Prophet ﷺ; they make it in all of them. I don’t know how it’s now in Masjidu l-Aqṣá. They used to make it there. In shā’a Llāh may Allāh ﷻ give power to Islām with their barakah. May He ﷻ protect us from fitnah and evil.
As we live in the end of times, there is a lot of fitnah and evil. The more worship is performed, the more mercy will come down. Allāh ﷻ will give His ﷻ mercy in general. Because of one person, there is barakah and mercy to other people as well. It gives strength to their īmān in shā’a Llāh. May it be blessed. May Allāh ﷻ reward those who perform this beautiful worship. May Allāh ﷻ be pleased with them.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
