Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says,
“الْحُبُّ فِي اللَّهِ وَالْبُغْضُ فِي اللَّهِ”
“Al-ḥubbu fi Llāh wa l-bughdu fi Llāh.”
To love for the sake of Allāh ﷻ, and to hate for the sake of Allāh ﷻ. These are the things that a Muslim should do. Whom does he love? He loves everything for the sake of Allāh ﷻ. If he loves something that Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla loves, he loves it for the sake of Allāh ﷻ. Not loving what Allāh ﷻ doesn’t love is also to attain Allāh’s ﷻ pleasure.
The state of this world – of course, there are things that people love very much. It’s not acceptable to say they “love” them all. Love is a beautiful thing. But if it is for the pleasure of Allāh ﷻ, if it is as Allāh ﷻ wants, it is acceptable. If it is not as Allāh ﷻ wants, it is wrong. It is not love, it is an affliction, it is torment, it is evil, it is the worst.
Therefore, if a person is going to do something, all kind of things, let him look if they are good or not. Is this person a good person for friendship? Is he someone to love? Should he not be loved? It is obvious from his state. If anyone takes him away from the way of Allāh ﷻ, this means they are people who mustn’t be loved. He is a person whom Allāh ﷻ does not love. And you should not love him either. Why? Because it will bring you nothing but evil and affliction. If he is a good person, you will love him, you will find goodness in him. He will help you, and you will help him too. You will attain the pleasure of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla; both you and him.
You must look for the person you will marry. They say, “I loved this guy very much. I loved this woman so much.” Okay, what kind of person is this woman or guy? Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim used to say, if you say “guy” then he’s not acceptable. If you say “man”, then okay. This is a “guy”, which means it’s not a good thing. Stay away from him. Stay away from him even if your ego wants.
What is this woman like? She’s not a woman to approach. She knows neither Allāh ﷻ nor our Prophet ﷺ. She has nothing from religion and īmān. She has nothing from family. Stay away from her. “I die from my love.” Die, that’s better. It’s a thousand times better to stay away from her than to be with her. So even if you die, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, who dies from love is a martyr. Therefore, stay away from them for the sake of Allāh ﷻ. If you suffer all kinds of things, that is a rise in rank for you.
Therefore, this scale, as we said, is the pleasure of Allāh ﷻ. You will look at whether he is a servant whom Allāh ﷻ loves or not. Of course, everyone is a servant of Allāh ﷻ. Even if he is the servant of Allāh ﷻ, Allāh ﷻ does not love everyone, He ﷻ says. Allāh ﷻ does not love those who do evil. He does not love the kāfirs. He does not love those who have no īmān.
If you look at people of this time, everyone is – Let them come to the way of Allāh ﷻ. We will love him, and put him on our heads. But if the person is an enemy of Allāh ﷻ, an enemy of religion, and an enemy of people, we have no obligation.
Therefore, this is the scale. We will love the person Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla loves. And we will stay away from the person He ﷻ does not love. It is not a matter of whether to love or not. Stay away and it is over. May Allāh ﷻ protect us. And may He ﷻ guide people so that they may be among the people Allāh ﷻ loves. May they be from the people Muslims love, in shā’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.
Al-Fatiha.
