Blessings Increase Through Gratitude

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Today, shukr to Allāh ﷻ, is the third day of ‘Īd. It passed with goodness and barakah, shukr to Allāh ﷻ. Many ‘Īds have passed from the time of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam until now. All of them were bestowed by Allāh ﷻ for the benefit of Muslims.

We must be grateful for what Allāh ﷻ has bestowed upon us. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says that blessings increase with gratitude. Nowadays, people don’t have much gratitude left. It would be accurate to say there’s no gratitude at all. When you talk to someone, they’re not grateful; they’re not content with anything.

When there’s no contentment, no barakah is left, and favors don’t increase. There becomes hardship. Blessings increase with gratitude. What is a blessing? A blessing is the gift Allāh ﷻ gives. There’s no limit to the blessings He ﷻ has given you.

Some say that there was a scholar who performs many acts of worship. He said, “I rely on my worship, I don’t need anything else. I have done everything perfectly.” He sees in his dream that the Day of Judgment has come, and he is being held accountable. They were put on the scale.

He sees that the blessing of seeing with one eye is placed on one side of the scale, and all the good deeds he has done are placed on the other. But they weren’t enough. That’s how valuable Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla’s blessings are. But people don’t appreciate them.

They don’t know the value of any blessing. They don’t make shukr to Allāh ﷻ. Then, when something happens, they are surprised what to do. May Allāh ﷻ protect us.

These blessings are the grace of Allāh ﷻ. They are the favor of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla for us. Shukr to Allāh ﷻ for all the blessings He ﷻ has given us. Therefore, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam said, “Every day, a person should give sadaqah for each of the 360 parts of their body that Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has given them.”

The Companions asked, “O RasūlaLlah, we don’t have that much money, how can we do this?”

He ﷺ replied, “It’s not only with money. Your good deeds are sadaqah. Picking up a stone from the ground is sadaqah. Not throwing trash on the street is sadaqah. Smiling at your Muslim brother, showing him a cheerful face, that too is sadaqah. And if that’s not enough,” said our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam “two rak’ahs of Duha prayer suffice for all those as sadaqah.”

Therefore, we must not forget that shukr is a daily sadaqah for these blessings given to us. As we said, even those without money should show a smiling face to their brothers and sisters. People should do good deeds and help others. Even if they don’t do much else, at least performing the two rak’ahs of the Duha prayer each day is considered sadaqah for the whole day.

Sadaqah, as we said, is gratitude to Allāh ﷻ. Giving that sadaqah is īmān in Allāh ﷻ. It is even little in return for these blessings. As we said, our reward is the intercession of our Prophet ﷺ. The person who follows his ﷺ way will attain his ﷺ intercession. If you don’t include that beautiful intention in your īmān and your actions, your actions have no value, no weight.

But if you do it for the intercession of our Prophet ﷺ, for his ﷺ sake, for his ﷺ honor, that smallest thing will be heavier than all your other deeds. Allāh ﷻ has bestowed this great blessing upon us all. The greatest blessing is the blessing of īmān. And being among the Ummah of our Prophet ﷺ is one of the greatest blessings.

May Allāh ﷻ bless us. May these holidays be a means for goodness. May He ﷻ protect us from evil and our egos. May it be of barakah, in shā’a Llāh. May our children have īmān. Shukr to Allāh ﷻ, children and families came to visit. May Allāh ﷻ accept their visits.

May they also be protected from evil. Because evil is very bad in this time. We are living in a very bad time. One doesn’t know where evil will come from. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary not to forget this matter of sadaqah or the two rak’ahs of Duha prayer. May Allāh ﷻ help us, in shā’a Llāh.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
