There are nights that pass like all others, and there are nights whose value is never lost in the sight of Allah ﷻ. Some nights carry such mercy that even a small act done within them is preserved, honoured, and returned many times over.

The Night of Israʾ Miʿraj is among those nights, a night in which Divine generosity is opened and sincere effort is never forgotten.

This night falls before the twenty-seventh day of Rajab. On this night, the Holy Prophet ﷺ was carried on the heavenly steed, the Buraq, and honoured with the journey of Israʾ and Miʿraj. It was also on this night that the five daily prayers were made obligatory for the Muslims, along with the fast of Ramadan and the giving of zakat.

All of this was shown and granted to the Holy Prophet ﷺ during his ascent to the sixth heaven. For this reason, it is a night of great holiness for the Ummah. On this night, the gates of Paradise are opened, and prayers are answered through the unending mercy and compassion of our Lord Almighty.

There is a hadith in which it is recommended to pray twenty rakaʿat on this night. In each rakaʿat, one recites Al-Fatiha followed by Al-Ikhlas.

After completing the prayer, one recites “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammadin wa sallim” one hundred times, and “Astaghfiru llah” one hundred times. One then performs a sajda (prostration), turning to Allah ﷻ and asking Him for one’s wishes and desires in this world and the next.

For the honour of this holy night, in which the Prophet stood before the Throne of the Almighty, all prayers will be granted. If one is not granted what one has asked for in this life, one will receive a thousand times more in the life to come.

In the city of al-Quds (Jerusalem), there once lived a woman known for her piety and fear of Allah ﷻ. When the month of Rajab arrived, she would set aside her fine clothing and wear an old and worn gown. Throughout the month, she performed her prayers and fasting while dressed in this humble garment.

As she lay on her deathbed, she said to her son, “My son, make sure that they bury me in my Rajab dress.”

After she passed away, her son felt embarrassed to bury his mother in this old gown, especially before relatives and neighbours, as she had been a woman of wealth and means. Instead, he wrapped her in a shroud of fine linen.

On the night after she was buried, she appeared to him in a dream and said, “My son, why have you not respected my last wish?” He awoke in fear, took the old gown, and hurried to the graveyard.

There, he found the freshly dug grave, but his mother was not inside. Overcome with grief, he fell to the ground and wept until he lost consciousness.

In that state, he heard a voice saying, “Do you not know that We do not abandon the one who showed respect for Our holy month of Rajab, who duly honoured it by fasting and praying? Do you not know that such a servant is not left alone in the grave? We have raised your mother up and brought her into Paradise!”

He heard these words and took them to heart. He returned home comforted, even though he did not find his mother in her grave.

May we show true respect for these holy months by honouring them properly.

May He ﷻ accept our worship and intentions, forgive our shortcomings, and keep us under His care in this life and in the grave.

Al-Fatiha.
