Advice for the Day of ‘Arafah & Eidul Adha

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

The Day of Arafah, 9th Dhul Hijjah, is the holiest day in our Muslim Calendar.

Pilgrims must gather at the plains of Arafah, between Zuhur and Maghrib, to be considered as having performed the Hajj.

As the Holy Prophet ﷺ said:

Hajj is Arafah.

Summary of Devotions

✅ Do fast on 9th Dhul Hijjah, insyaAllah it removes the sins of last year, and the next.

✅ Do also make intention to fast the Sunnat of Thursday at the same time.

✅ Do be in fervent du’as during the Wuquf period in Arafah. And since it is also the Night of Eid, you may and should continue to keep the night vigil till Fajr, followed by performing the Eid prayer after sunrise.

✅ Do pray Solat Khusoma on both the Day of Arafah and Eid, between Zuhur and Asar is the best time. Those who do not know how to perform this prayer, do refer to this link

✅ Do read the entire kitab of du’as, Hizbul A’zham tomorrow too. If you need a PDF copy do download here. This kitab takes about 5 hours to finish, so you may want to start on it earlier.

✅ You may and should begin to recite the takbir of Eid, and this recitation should continue till the final day of Tashriq, ending at the Azan of Maghrib on 13th Dhul Hijjah

✅ This takbir Eid is a syiar (symbol) of Islam, so do perform it singly or in jemaah, loudly or privately, as you please. The usual practice is to recite it after every solat fardhu, but of course you may recite it anytime throughout the entire 5 days, as you please.

You may play the takbir Eid on your mobile devices or laptops (in the background) as you conduct your daily activities, so that you may subconsciously hum along and memorize it too in the process. Encourage the children to sing along too.

Here is a video link and is PDF link of the takbir.

✅ On 9th Dhul Hijjah, it is best to recite:

1,000 Ikhlāṣ,

1,000 Astaghfiru Llāh, and

1,000 Lā ilāha illā Llāh.

Eid Day

✅ On the morning of Eid, remember to bathe the Sunnat bath of Eid, but those who are doing Qurban still should not cut hair & nails, till the Qurban has been completed.

Do not eat before the Eid prayers, eat only once you have returned home.

✅ Go to Eid prayers and return by different routes, whilst reciting the takbir of Eid along the way.

✅ Ladies (even those menstruating) are encouraged to attend the Eid prayer to listen to the Khutbah. Since this is now not possible due to Covid restrictions, make the intention of attending, in order to share in its rewards.

✅ Remember, the Khutbah of Eid is after the solat, so if you come late, you would miss the prayer itself, unlike for Jumaah prayers where latecomers miss the Khutbah but still get to solat Jummah. So don’t be late!

✅ Do not leave after the Eid solat, skipping the Khutbah!

And the same restrictions of Jummah Khutbah apply to the Eid Khutbah – no talking!

That includes “talking” on your phone i.e chatting on Whatsapp. Keep your phone aside and on silent mode, and give full attention to the Khatib, in order to receive the full blessings of the Eid prayer.

Indeed, Angels stand at the intersection of every road you pass on the way home, sending you salaams and congratulating you for your good fortune of being amongst the practising believers.

✅ Recite on Eid Day:

Subhanallahi wabihamdihi

Subhanallahil azheem

300 times

and send it as a gift to all Ahlul Qubur. Allah will send the lights of those readings to your own grave too.

✅ If you miss the Eid prayer or did not get a slot at the mosque, perform it at home. You may do it singly or in jemaah with your family. (No need to give Khutbah).

Jazakumullahu Khairan & Eid-ul Adha Mubarak.
