Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says in this Surah we read [in Fajr prayer]:
“وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ (1) الَّذِينَ إِذَا اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ”
(Qur’an 83:01-02)
“Waylun Lil-muţaffifīn (1) Al-Ladhīna ‘Idhā Aktālū `Alá An-Nāsi Yastawfūna”
“Woe to those that deal in fraud (1) Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.
Woe to those people who cheat others in their works and earnings, says Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. Wayl is a valley in Hell. That valley is for those who deceive people, who deceive them in the scales, to those who promise people and take money from them but don’t fulfill their promise.
What they earn will take them to hell, not Paradise. They think they have earned something in dunyā. But they have prepared Hell for themselves. Because they are violating people’s rights. This is on one hand.
On the other hand, Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, if you’ve done any business, if you’ve bought something, borrowed money, gone into works, in whatever you do, “write it down”, He ﷻ says. This is an order; fulfill it.
“This is my brother, this is my friend, my Muslim brother. He has performed Hajj fifteen times. He prays five times. He has done this and that. There’s no need for that. There’s no need to write it down. This man is trustworthy. Let’s not write it down.” Don’t ever say that!
Allāh ﷻ hasn’t exempted anyone from this. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, “Write.” Even the closest one – we’re not saying don’t trust them but write. Because human beings are humans, they’re not angels. First, there’s the ego. Second, there’s shayṭān. And dunyā deceives people.
Therefore, if you do something [a deal] indeed write it down in order to prevent harm to the other party; it’s to prevent harm. Because if you surrender your neck to the other like a sheep, his ego will take it. There’s no need for that.
At first, they might say, “We’ll do it, we’ll pay,” and so on. Then, the ego steps in. Your work will be with no Barakah and bad. The one who deceived you will commit sin, and you will also commit sin, since you became a means for them. You helped them commit sin.
“How did I help them! My money is gone! My belongings are gone!” You’re a part of it because you didn’t fulfill Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla’s command. You helped that person harm you. That’s what it is.
As they say, the religion of Islām is like threading the needle. “He cheated me. My money is gone.” And on top of that money loss, you’ve also sinned. You were the means for it.
Therefore, you must fulfill the commands of Islām. “He’s my father, my sibling, my friend, my brother, my sister,” this or that; they keep saying this, constantly. There is nothing as accommodation bill. If you sign a bill, you must pay it back in full. Otherwise your house will be confiscated, he will come for your business, he will come for you.
We’ve said that a thousand times. And yet, they still come and say this and that happened. Brother, it’s not me who said this, it is Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla who said this. People from 1500 years ago, from the time of Our Prophet ﷺ, and the people now: as soon as they get the chance, their ego is merciless.
Therefore, we must be careful. Be careful with your wealth. Be careful with your rizq. Do as Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says so that it will be of barakah. Because when there is injustice, they say that money becomes filthy. It means it becomes najis, impure. It contaminates everything. And it goes on like this. Filth and impurity spreads, and barakah flees.
So be careful. Don’t come and complain afterward. They would often come to Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim as well. He would say, “My brother, why didn’t you come and ask before this happened? You come and ask after it happened.” Therefore, we must be careful.
Muslims should not make their rizq ḥarām. May Allāh ﷻ protect us. May Allāh ﷻ guide everyone. May Allāh ﷻ give mind and understanding to those who think they have earned something. This is not a gain, this is a pit in hell for them. May Allāh ﷻ protect us.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.
