Who’s the Luckiest?

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

مَنْ يَهْدِ اَللَّهُ فَلَا مُضِلَّ لَهُ, وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَا هَادِيَ لَهُ

‘Whoever Allah guides, no one can lead astray; and whoever Allah leads astray, no one can guide him.’ [Ḥadīth].

Who is the lucky one? It is the person whom Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has guided. Because it happens by the will of Allāh ﷻ. A person who has attained guidance is saved. If Allāh ﷻ does not will guidance for him, he is an unfortunate person. He may possess the whole world, everything may be his, but the Hereafter is not his.

Not attaining the Hereafter is the worst thing. In this world, he indulges in all kinds of pleasures and disgrace, never refraining from any pleasure, trying everything without missing anything. That is, he is left with nothing but sin for the Hereafter. Those are the unlucky people.

The lucky one is the one who is on the way of Allāh ﷻ, who obeys Allāh ﷻ. The person who performs his prayers, fasts, pays his zakāt, and does everything else, is a lucky person. Because shayṭān follows him, trying to prevent him. No matter how much you do, shayṭān will never leave you.

Therefore, those who are on this way should thank Allāh ﷻ, praise Allāh ﷻ that we are on this way. We see people eating outside during Ramaḍān, and doing other things during the day. There’s no need to be angry at them. We should feel pity for them.

They are unlucky people; they are not destined for goodness. In the Hereafter – May Allāh ﷻ protect us. Therefore, we should make shukr to Allāh ﷻ. And there’s no need to say, “I’m better than them.” We should say, “Praise be to Allāh ﷻ, may He ﷻ keep us steadfast.”

We hear many complaints, “My son used to pray five times a day, he wouldn’t leave a prayer, I don’t understand what happened. He’s not doing anything. He’s hanging out with bad friends. He’s stopped praying, he’s gotten involved in bad things.”

Therefore, those who are on the way of Allāh ﷻ should always be thankful and ask Allāh ﷻ for help so that we remain steadfast on this way. May He ﷻ not make us go astray. This way is a beautiful way. May Allāh ﷻ guide others as well. May they too taste this beauty.

Because the beauty of īmān is unparalleled. We see what the world has become. The pleasures and delights of the world have limits. The desires of the ego are infinite, but even those have limits. Once you reach a certain point, you can’t go beyond that point; you can’t enjoy it anymore.

That’s why they want to try something else, something different. No matter what, good or bad, even the worst, the ego will still pursue it. But as we said, there is a limit, and it cannot be exceeded. That beauty can only be attained eternally in Paradise. So, one must be on the way of Allāh ﷻ in this world to reach that beauty.

May Allāh ﷻ guide people. May Allāh ﷻ protect us. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
