Which Dhikr Should We Recite Daily?

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا

(Qur’ān 07:180)

‘Wa li-Llāhi l-asmā’u l-ḥusnā fad‘ūhu bihā’

‘And to Allah belong the Most Beautiful Names, so call on Him by them.’

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has ninety-nine names. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, “Recite them.” He ﷺ also said, “Whoever memorizes or recites them will enter Paradise.”

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has many names, but ninety-nine names have been revealed to the Ummah of our ‎Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. It’s very good if we recited them every day. Thus, we will attain the good tidings of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam for Paradise, in shā’a Llāh. “You will enter Paradise”, says our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.

People sometimes wonder, “Which name should we recite?” In ṭarīqah, there is the duty of reciting “Ya Wadūd” three hundred times daily. Reciting this is good. It increases love among people. Evil will not come from people. The name “Wadūd” has meanings like familiarity and love. It has many meanings; the names of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla have infinite meanings. Shukr to Allāh ﷻ, Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim recommended this to us. Those in ṭarīqah should recite it.

Of course, there are other names as well. For those who ask, “Which one should we recite?”, you should recite and make dhikr of all the ninety-nine names once a day. Barakah come from the blessed and beautiful names of Allāh ﷻ, and all kinds of goodness reach people. A person who is with Allāh ﷻ, all kinds of goodness will manifest upon him, he attains goodness, and stays away from evil.

May Allāh ﷻ keep His ﷻ dhikr constant in our hearts, in shā’a Llāh. May Allāh ﷻ grant it to those who do not recite it. Because today, people know neither religion, nor īmān, nor Prophet, nor Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. They live empty lives. Besides themselves, they drag others into this emptiness by saying, “There is nothing.”

They are unaware of the immense benefits a person receives from merely mentioning one of Allāh’s ﷻ Names. Light fills their hearts and faces, their lives become beautiful and of barakah. May Allāh ﷻ not deprive us of this blessing, and may He ﷻ grant it to those who do not yet recite it, in shā’a Llāh.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
