The Virtues of Sha’ban al-Mu’azzam by Shaykh Adnan Kabbaniق

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

It is narrated from Sayyidatina ʿAisha, Umm al-Mu’minin (RA), that the most beloved month to the Prophet ﷺ is Shaʿban.

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Shaʿban will guard you from Hellfire. Whoever wishes to meet me should fast three days in Shaʿban.”

The Prophet ﷺ also said, “Shaʿban is my month, and Ramadan is my nation’s month. Shaʿban is the expiator, and Ramadan is the purifier.”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever fasts the first Thursday of Shaʿban and the last Thursday of Shaʿban, Allah will grant him entry into Paradise.”

Sayyidina Anas (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ, “What is the best fasting after Ramadan?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Shaʿban.”

Shaʿban is a great month, and within it is a holy night known as Laylatul Bara’ah, which falls on the 15th night of Shaʿban.

Sayyidina Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrated from the Prophet ﷺ: “The Archangel Jibreel (AS) came to me on the 15th night of Shaʿban and said, ‘O Muhammad, raise your head to the heavens.’ I asked, ‘What is this night?’ Jibreel replied, ‘On this night Allah opens three hundred doors of mercy and forgives all people except those who associate partners with Allah, sorcerers and fortune-tellers, those who persist in adultery, and those addicted to drinking wine.’”

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah looks at His creation on the 15th night of Shaʿban and forgives all creation except the polytheist and the one who harbours hatred.”

It is also mentioned that on the 15th day of Shaʿban, the jinn, birds, beasts, and even the whales of the oceans fast on this day.

The fuqaha have said that Allah Almighty has revealed Laylatul Bara’ah as a night of judgement and decree, in which a person’s lifespan for the coming year is decided, and deeds are raised.

Allah Almighty has placed great goodness specifically in four nights of the year:

Laylatul Bara’ah – 15th night of Shaʿban
Laylatul ʿEid al-Fitr – 1st Shawwal
Laylatul ʿEid al-Adha – 10th Dhu’l Hijjah
Laylatul ʿArafah – 9th Dhu’l Hijjah

Allah Almighty has hidden Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) as a mercy and a means of salvation from the Fire.

In a sahih hadith, Sayyidatina ʿAisha (RA) said that the Prophet ﷺ would fast the whole month of Shaʿban.
