The Believer Never Lies

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, a believer does not lie. He might do other things, he might commit other sins, but a believer does not lie. Lying is for what purpose? The purpose is always evil. Lying for personal benefit.

Therefore, it is not a characteristic of a believer. Of course, a believer can commit other sins. But he must always tell the truth. He must tell what’s right. Telling the truth is virtuous. It increases a person’s honor.

His rank rises in the sight of Allāh ﷻ. His rank among people also becomes high. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam was known as Muhammad Al-Amīn ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Amīn which means the most trustworthy, the one who doesn’t lie.

That’s why, in Islām, lying in testimony is one of the major sins. It is one of the greatest sins. People think lying a minor sin. Whereas it’s one of the major sins. It’s even more […] than adultery.

For example, giving a false witness is a major sin. Because it either ruins a person’s life, or serves the right to someone else and misleads justice. And when justice is falsely served, it becomes oppression. And oppression does not last. These things done for worldly benefit are of no benefit. That person will have fire inside him.

Therefore, any kind of lie is a sin. We mustn’t lie. They say, “النجاة في الصدق”, “An-nacātu fi s-sidq.” Salvation lies in telling the truth. Someone might lie and think he’ll be saved, and he might seem like he’s saved in front of people, but he has no salvation in ākhirah.

May Allāh ﷻ forgive us. We must repent and seek forgiveness. If one makes a false testimony, a person must ask forgiveness from whomever he harmed. Otherwise, he will bear a great punishment and affliction in ākhirah.

May Allāh ﷻ protect us. May Allāh ﷻ not separate us from the right way. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
