#SultanSohbah: How to Reach Laylatu l-Qadr

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

In sha’a Llāh today we are honoring this night with the intention of Laylatu l-Qadr. That is our intention, in sha’a Llāh. If it is not this night, then another night. But to honor this night, reviving this night is performing prayers for the sake of Allāh ﷻ, performing Qiyāmu l-Layl, then getting up for Tahajjud, having suḥūr and then continuing with worship. That’s it, for honoring the night. Honoring it even though it is not known which night it is.

Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla has honored it. He ﷻ has given us this night especially for our ‎Prophet’s ﷺ ummah. More than a hundred thousand other prophets, one hundred and twenty four thousand prophets had come. None of them has been given this much honor and this much virtue. One night is not more virtuous than a thousand nights, but more virtuous and better than a thousand months. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has given a lifetime’s worth of virtue in one night.

Those who know its value have certainly received their share. They receive it. Whether they see it or not, if they do the same thing every night, they attain it for the honor of that night. Every year, with the permission of Allāh ﷻ, a person, a Muslim gains a thousand years of virtue. This is a great honor. People leave this and follow a few ignorant people. They leave the religion. They do not like the religion. They think they will gain something. The shayṭāns they follow are of no benefit to them.

This favor that Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla has given us: being from the ummah of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam is the greatest honor, the greatest virtue. Whoever accepts him ﷺ will attain the highest ranks. He is a lucky person. He is a person who knows the value. He is a person who knows the jewels. He distinguishes the jewel from the dung. Some find dung more valuable. He falls after dung. He goes after the dung, but it does not benefit him. We must know this favor that Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has given us. We must benefit from it.

Shukr to Allāh ﷻ. Who are the Ummah of our Prophet ﷺ? Those who follow him ﷺ and glorify him ﷺ. Those who are not from the Ummah: even if they are his ﷺ relatives, they are the enemies of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla. The uncle of our Prophet ﷺ ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, Abu Lahab, his real uncle is in hell. Why? Because he is an unlucky person. If he had luck, Allāh ﷻ would have honored him. He is unlucky that he became from the people of hell. A lucky person values this luck. He makes shukr to Allāh ﷻ day and night. He does not ruin his ākhirah by running after other people. Ākhirah is permanent and eternal. Dunyā is temporary. A person who sells the ākhirah for dunyā is a poor person.

Therefore, this night is a blessed night. May Allāh ﷻ make it blessed for us all. May Allāh ﷻ grant us those gifts for our intention of this night being Laylatu l-Qadr. May He ﷻ grant it to us on any night, in shā’a Lāh. May He ﷻ grant us those blessings. Shukr to Allāh ﷻ.

What is Qiyāmu l-Layl, reviving the night? Some people drive around in their cars until the morning, from one mosque to another. That’s not necessary. Or they pray at home until the morning without sleeping. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, if you pray ‘Isha prayer, then perform Qiyāmu l-Layl prayer and wake up for tahajjud before Fajr, it is as if you have revived the night.

So it is not that difficult. Don’t make it difficult. The religion of Islām is easiness. Benefit from that ease. Because when it is hard, people don’t do it. They say, “Am I going to stay up all night?” Even if they stay up, they last for a day or two. After that, people can’t stand it. That’s why, it is easy. There are two rakats called Qiyāmu l-Layl before going to sleep. When you wake up for suḥūr, you pray tahajjud and you will have revived the night. May Allāh ﷻ bless it.

May Allāh ﷻ grant this luck and īmān to everyone. May Allāh ﷻ guide them. In this month of Ramaḍān, if they do not seek forgiveness for the evil, the disrespect and badness done towards Allāh ﷻ, there is a great punishment for them. Those who disrespect Allāh ﷻ and wage war against Allāh ﷻ will certainly be punished. If they seek forgiveness and repent, that is another thing. But if they do not, they will surely suffer. There is a record of everything in the presence of Allāh ﷻ. There are angels on the right and left. They write the good and the bad. The angel of the bad waits for him to ask forgiveness so that he can erase it. If he does, he will erase the bad deeds he has done. If he doesn’t, he will wait and eventually it will be written. If he doesn’t ask forgiveness until the end of his life, he will find his punishment in ākhirah. It won’t benefit him in dunyā anyway. May Allāh ﷻ guide us all, in sha’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
