Prophet ﷺ Never Accepted to Be Served

Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam had every good characteristic. Even though he ﷺ had a servant, he wanted to do his work by himself. He liked to do so. He never wanted to trouble anyone.

Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam never wanted anyone to be troubled for worldly matters of his own. He wanted them to serve on the way of Allāh ﷻ, for the pleasure of Allāh ﷻ, to serve on the way of Islām, our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.

There are many examples. Our Holy Prophet ‘alayhi s-salām used to patch his torn clothes by himself. And while Al-Masjid an-Nabawī was built, he ﷺ used to carry rocks. Ṣaḥābah would cut bricks and beg our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam to have rest telling him they’d do everything.

But our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam never listened. “I am just like you. Just like you are getting tired, I will do the same for the pleasure of Allāh ﷻ”, he ﷺ said.

For Sayyidinā Salmān al-Fārisīy, his owner had asked for gold in return for his freedom. He had asked for a lot of gold and for dates to be planted. He said, “Wait until it gives fruit. I will set him free after that”.

Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam was asked to accept it. As it was Salmān al-Fārisīy they accepted it, and as there was an agreement they couldn’t break it. The man thought it required years to give dates.

Usually here [in Lefke] as well, a palm tree won’t give dates before 10-15 years. Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam dug holes for dates with his holy hands together with ṣaḥābah. He ﷺ planted the seeds with his holy hands.

That same year, as a miracle of our Holy Prophet ﷺ it gave fruit. And the man had to let go because of the agreement. He set Salmān al-Fārisīy free.

Our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam is an example to us. It is good for us to do our own work by ourselves. It shouldn’t be a burden to others. It will bring benefit to you.

Something done with your own hands brings more barakah. Therefore, when you have work to do, strive to do it not for this world but in order to follow the way of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam and do it by yourself.

Certainly, that has benefit to people. Especially, out of sunnah of our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam don’t take obligations from anyone. Don’t trouble anyone. It is much better when you do whatever you can by yourself. It is better both physically and spiritually.

May Allāh ﷻ help us and not give us hardship. Allāh ﷻ gave us legs and arms. He ﷻ gave us strength, ears and eyes. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla gave us everything. We should be grateful for them. And when we use them, we make shukr for them as well.

Turkish people have a nice saying; “May Allāh ﷻ not make our hand or foot to stop working”. They mean to have healthy arms and legs.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
