Lessons from the Battle of Badr

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

“وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِبَدْرٍ وَأَنتُمْ أَذِلَّةٌ”

(Qur’ān 03:123)

“Wa laqad naṣarakumu Llāhu bibadrin wa antum aḍillatun”

“And already had Allah given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were few in number.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla made our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu alayhi wa sallam victorious in the Battle of Badr. “Even though you were fewer, Allāh ﷻ granted you victory.” Victory is from Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. Even if a person has nothing or no one, huge armies can be defeated. When Allāh ﷻ wills, it happens.

What happened with our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam in the Battle of Badr, this victory given to them is shown by Allāh ﷻ as a lesson to the believers. The believers shouldn’t say, “We can’t do it.” Who is with Allāh ﷻ wins. Who is an enemy to Allāh ﷻ is always a loser.

Some people say, “Why couldn’t we win?” It is the will of Allāh ﷻ. Victory and loss are both from Allāh ﷻ. But a believer, whether he wins or loses, as long as he is with Allāh ﷻ, he is always in profit. He will not lose. He goes on the way of Allāh ﷻ. He does everything for the sake of Allāh ﷻ. His thawāb and reward are with Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla.

This blessed day is tomorrow. It’s on the seventeenth. But from today, our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam started preparing. It’s a journey. To go on that journey takes a lot of preparation. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam told the ṣaḥābah, “Now this is a war here. You are few and they are many. According to that, if you have something to say tell me.“

Two ṣaḥābah came: Miqdād ibn Aswad and another blessed ṣaḥābi. They said, “We do not say like banī Israil.” They said [to Sayyidina Mūsa ‘alayhi s-salām], “Go you and your Lord and fight. Then, we will come.” That’s what they said.

If Allāh ﷻ wants, of course one person can defeat them all but that is not the right way for people. War, jihād is also a virtue. Therefore, those ṣaḥābah said, “We do not say like what banī Israil said, ‘Go and fight with your Lord, then we will come. We will sit here.’ We are with you until the last breath. Until the last drop of our blood, we are on the way of Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla.”

Our ‎Prophet ﷺ knows. And he ﷺ was happy with the words of these holy ones. He ﷺ was very happy. And that’s how it should be. You should be with the truth. You will always be with the truth. If you win, dunyā goes but the profit remains. The profit is the profit of ākhirah.

The names of those blessed ṣaḥābah are among the greatest people of Islām. Their names are mentioned. Barakah is taken from them. When they are mentioned, there is virtue, there is barakah and there is goodness.

May Allāh ﷻ raise their stations. In shā’a Llāh may their barakah be upon us. Asḥāb-i Badr; they are famous. This is the day our Holy ‎Prophet ﷺ started the preparations. The war began like tomorrow, the second day, on the seventeenth. Like tomorrow the polytheists were defeated. Tomorrow, in shā’a Llāh, we will explain this matter more. In shā’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.
