Laylatul Baraʾah: Night of 15th of Shaʿban

Bismi Llahi r-Rahmani r-Rahim

فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ

(Qur’ān 44:3–4)

“Fī laylatin mubārakatin innā kunnā mundhirīn. Fīhā yufraqu kullu amrin ḥakīm.”

“In a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn mankind. On that night is made distinct every precise matter.”

Regarding tonight, Laylatu l-Barā’ah, Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is saying in Qur’ān ‘Aẓīmu sh-Sha’n about the value and meaning of this night. Tonight is a holy night. What will happen in a year for everyone will be written one by one on this night. It is written.

We should spend this holy night with du‘ā. There is also a 100 rak‘āt prayer. In addition to that, you can pray Ṣalātu t-Tasābīḥ. We will do that inshā’Allah. Those who are not in jamā‘ah can do it on their own. It does not have to be in jamā‘ah. There are people who say it cannot be done in jamā‘ah. But jamā‘ah is better. It is nicer to celebrate this night in a community. Allah ﷻ loves jamā‘ah.

Certainly, as it had different meanings in old times, some scholars say there should not be jamā‘ah. But the more people gather for the pleasure of Allah ﷻ now, the more benefit there is. “Yadullāhi ma‘a l-jamā‘ah.” Allah’s ﷻ Hand of Power is upon the community. Allah’s ﷻ Hand of Power is with jamā‘ah, with the community.

On this holy night, the rizq, death, deeds, everything that will happen in a year is written. If a person will reach another year or not, whatever will happen, whatever the will of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is, wherever there will be a war, flood, or earthquake, all of this will be written tonight a year in advance. Therefore, even though it is written in the presence of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla, He ﷻ can change whatever He ﷻ wants and do whatever He ﷻ wants.

There is Yāsīn that is to be read three times tonight between Maghrib and ‘Ishā’. They are recited with these intentions, a long good life, asking for ḥalāl rizq, and good deeds to make our īmān steadfast. There is a certain du‘ā. This du‘ā is recited after each Yāsīn between Maghrib and ‘Ishā’. If there is evil, it will be changed to goodness inshā’Allah.

Allah ﷻ is capable of everything. We cannot interfere in the wisdom and work of Allah ﷻ. Our Holy Prophet ﷺ has told us about it, and it is beneficial for us to follow him ﷺ and do this. Everything is in Allah’s ﷻ Hand of Power. He ﷻ can protect you if He ﷻ wants. He ﷻ can delay if He ﷻ wants. Everything is in His ﷻ Hand.

People’s minds cannot comprehend anything, and they cannot comprehend the wisdom of Allah ﷻ at all. Therefore, just follow what is said. Follow the way shown by our Holy Prophet ﷺ. You will be at ease and in safety. The actual safety is the safety of Ākhirah. Inshā’Allah we will reach safety by being steadfast and will always be in safety inshā’Allah. We will be on the way of Allah ﷻ.

May it be blessed upon you. There are a few holy nights in a year, and tonight is one of these holy nights. May Allah ﷻ make it good and full of barakah. Inshā’Allah may it be a means for goodness. May there be safety. May there be victory to Islām inshā’Allah. May Mahdī ‘alayhi s-salām, whom we are waiting for, come inshā’Allah.
