Keep Your Heart Void of Deceit

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

“يا بُنيَّ إن قدرتَ أن تُصبحَ وتُمسيَ ليسَ في قلبِكَ غشٌّ لأحدٍ فافعل ثمَّ قالَ لي يا بنيَّ وذلِكَ من سُنَّتي وَمن أَحبِّ سُنَّتِي فَقَدْ أَحَبَّنِي وَمَنْ أَحَبَّنِي كَانَ مَعِي فِي الْجنَّة”

“Oh my son! If you can keep your heart morning and evening void of deceit towards anyone, do so. Oh my son! that pertains to my Sunnah. He who loves my Sunnah has loved me, and he who loves me will be with me in paradise.”

Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, in the ḥadīth we read in the Khutbah, “O my son,” to the ṣaḥābah Anas Efendi, who served him ﷺ. “If you can not deceive anyone morning and evening, then do it, for this is my Sunnah,” says Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.

“And whoever follows my Sunnah loves me,” says our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. “And whoever loves me will be with me in Paradise.”

This is the summary of all of Islām. A Muslim should strive to do this. They should not deceive anyone. They should not cause harm to anyone. Whether they are near or far, they should think good for everyone. They should not think of evil for personal benefit, so that they can follow the Sunnah of our ‎Prophet ﷺ.

The Sunnah of our Prophet ﷺ is crucial. In ṭarīqah anyways, loving our Prophet ﷺ, following his ﷺ way, and performing his ﷺ Sunnah are the primary adab. Ṭarīqah is based upon adab. Adab means good manners and character. Good manners means doing good, thinking good.

Not falling into evil, even in your heart. Not falling into evil and not thinking evil. You should constantly think good for people so that it will be good for you. Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam said, “So that you may be with me ﷺ in Paradise.” That is our greatest goal.

Humans now consider themselves intelligent, wondering, “Why was I created?” That is why you were created. Allāh ﷻ placed you in dunyā to prepare you for ākhirah. He ﷻ sent you here to follow His ﷻ path.

Otherwise, if you were created for something else – there are many others created for something else. They eat and drink; they are the four-legged beings. Their life is to eat, drink, and die; nothing else. They don’t think about what good they should do, what they should do.

People should think about that, that our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam is the Master of mankind ﷺ, the most exalted of mankind. One should take him ﷺ as an example and go on his ﷺ way. Those who follow his ﷺ way will win.

Those who do not follow his ﷺ way, that is, those who go on the way of someone who is not in the way of Allāh ﷻ, will not benefit themselves. There may be harm, but there will be no benefit.

If you follow someone who is not in the way of Allāh ﷻ, you might benefit from some of their things, but most of the time, there won’t be any benefit at all. On the contrary, there will be harm.

Therefore, one must be on the way of Allāh ﷻ. One must be on the way of our Prophet ﷺ. One must also – and this is so important – value the Sunnah of our Prophet ﷺ. We must be careful about it. Now, shayṭān’s ways are many. Many people are newly emerging, claiming to be Muslims.

They are Muslims, but they don’t know how to benefit. They call benefiting a sin. They say, “If you follow the Sunnah, you have strayed from the way.” They deceive people by saying, “The Prophet is human like us.” These are the people who deceive; they don’t respect him ﷺ.

When they don’t, there becomes neither love nor respect for our Prophet ﷺ. Then, things are difficult for them in the ākhirah. In fact, it is also difficult for them in dunyā as well. Because in dunyā, there is constant deception, lies, and all kinds of hatred for people in their hearts.

They think of evil, not good towards people. They say, “Allāh ﷻ forgives them, but we do not forgive them.” They are such a type of people. May Allāh ﷻ protect us from their evil. Because their evil is the evil of shayṭān.

Allāh ﷻ is the All-Forgiving, Allāh ﷻ is the Ever-Forgiving. Do not deceive anyone. Do not even do so in your heart, says our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Do not even put it in your heart to deceive anyone.

May Allāh ﷻ make us be with our Prophet ﷺ, in sha’a Llāh. We follow his ﷺ way, his ﷺ sunnah, in sha’a Llāh. This is the ṭarīqah. Ṭarīq, way. Ṭarīqah means the way. And the way is the way of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.

Al-Fatiha.
