How to Cleanse Our Hearts?

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, “اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لاَ يَنْفَعُ وَقَلْبٍ لاَ يَخْشَعُ”, “Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min ‘ilmin la yanfa’, wa qalbin la yakhsha’”, “O Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is of no benefit, a heart that is does not fear You.” Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, O Allāh ﷻ keep us away from having a heart not afraid of Allāh ﷻ and knowledge that’s of no benefit.

The heart, Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, “ما وَسِعَني أرضي ولا سَمائي، ولكنْ وَسِعَني قَلبُ عبدي المُؤمِنِ”, “Indeed my earth and my heavens could not contain Me but the heart of my believing servant can.” Allāh ﷻ says this in ḥadīth Qudsi, through Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Because no place fits Him ﷻ, you cannot know how Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla is.

He ﷻ said, “Nothing can contain Me, only the heart of My believer.” The heart is very important. He ﷻ said, it can fit Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. Of course, this means that the heart is the most important in the body of the human being, both materially and spiritually.

Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam also says, “ألا وإنَّ في الجَسَدِ مُضْغَةً، إذا صَلَحَتْ، صَلَحَ الجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ، وإذا فَسَدَتْ، فَسَدَ الجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ، ألا وهي القَلْبُ”, “In the body there is a piece of flesh, and the whole body is sound if it is sound, but the whole body is corrupt if it is corrupt. It is the heart.” There is one piece in the body of mankind, if it is working well, the whole body is working. If not, the whole body is finished. This is again for both.

Materially: if the heart is not working they undergo an operation, they make everything to fix it. But to fix the spirituality, you must work on it. People must also look after fixing it spiritually. Materially, most people fix it. Now doctors are very knowledgeable and do perfect operations. Many of them save people from death. They make something repairing the heart and people continue with their lives again.

If they are good, they continue. If they are bad, they also continue on the same way; no problem for the body. Until their time comes, they will go.

But spiritually, it is more important. You must repair it. You must try to fix your heart by following Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. His ﷺ way fixes hearts; taking away all the illness, taking away darkness, taking away all bad things. Then, Allāh ﷻ enters your heart.

This place must first be clean. How can we do this? Of course first, Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam is showing us all.

He ﷺ said, ‘قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ’, ‘Qul ‘In Kuntum Tuĥibbūna Allāha Fa Attabi`ūnī Yuĥbibkumu Allāh’, ‘If you love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you.’ (Qur’ān 03:31). “If you love Allāh ﷻ, follow me ﷺ, Allāh ﷻ will love you.” And to follow Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam, you cannot do so by yourself, somebody must show you the way.

On the way, there must be guidance. If there’s no guidance, you will be lost. Even in this dunyā, in this small place here, if you come without Abdulmatin Efendi, you will be lost. We don’t know where to go; so he showed us. This is important because many people are cheated by shayṭān. They say, “There’s no need for a Shaykh, no need for ṣaḥābah”, they even don’t want our ‎Prophet ﷺ.

They say, “We are looking at Qur’an, and we will find our way.” These people, from the first step, fell down from the highest point to the endlessly lowest point. Those who don’t go on this way, from the beginning, from the first step, finish themselves. Allāh ﷻ will never be happy with them.

The continuation of the ḥadīth is, “مِنْ عِلْمٍ لاَ يَنْفَعُ”, “Min ‘ilmin la yanfa’”, “O Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is of no benefit.” Knowledge that is of no benefit; not benefitting you. These people read and after that think, “There’s no need for any guidance, I can follow myself. There’s no need for anybody to follow.” Nowadays, there’s so many of such people everywhere in the world.

People need spiritual guidance. With spirituality they will have satisfaction and happiness. So people are coming to believers for some guidance to guide them. Many people are coming to them but shayṭān is not happy with that. So they are giving examples from Qur’an, from ḥadīth.

Their mashāyikh are saying, “Look, this is exactly like this. This is written in Qur’an, in some ḥadīths. You mustn’t do this. You must look by yourself, don’t follow anybody.” What Sayyidina ‘Ali said when there were problems among them: “كَلِمَةُ حَقٍّ يُرَادُ بِهَا بَاطِلٌ”, “A word of truth by which falsehood is intended.” A word that is haqq, not a lie, true: but in which falsehood is intended. The word is true but the meaning is bad, not true.

For this, many people are cheated; especially Arabs who are the most cheated. Because they know Arabic and these people are speaking in Arabic saying, “Look, this is like this, like that” and they say “Yes, true.” But they are actually cheated. For this, they will lose what Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla will give them.

As we said, to make your heart clean is not difficult. AlhamduliLlah we are following the regular teachings of Islām, teachings of humanity: to not harm anybody, to not cheat anybody, to not steal from anybody, to not do any bad thing to people. And we continue on worshiping five times. It’s not difficult. Like this, it will be clean and ready for Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla.

Not like others, especially other people whose hearts are full of hate, not respecting anybody, first of all not respecting Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Every time I remember what these people say, I become angry at them.

The first most important thing is to respect Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam says, you will not become a real believer until you love me more than yourself, your family, your father, mother. So this is the order of Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.

AlhamduliLlah we love him ﷺ. We will not lose anything if we say we love him ﷺ. AlhamduliLlah with real love, we do not lose. Why are these people too angry? Because they have envy. And envy is the (most) biggest attribute of shayṭān. From his envy, he was thrown out of paradise. He said, “I will make all people like me.” For this, he is trying. If they are not believers he says, “Ok, they are mine.”

If they are believers, shaytan puts this illness in their hearts. He fills their hearts with darkness, bad things, dirtiness, illness. He puts every bad thing in their heart. And from their heart, it is coming out on their face. Mawlānā Shaykh Nāẓim used to say, “عبوس الوجه، كريه المنظر”. Meaning his face is ugly [and frowny]. This is what shayṭān makes to people.

Ṭarīqah is to clean this. Allāh ﷻ made ṭarīqah through Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam. It is a blessed way. AlhamduliLlah we are here in this blessed place. We thank Allāh ﷻ for this. The light of Allāh ﷻ is growing from here. Because the masjid is Baytu Llah, House of Allāh ﷻ. All masājid are called House of Allāh ﷻ. Everybody can come; nobody can prevent them. This is what we are, in ṭarīqah, trying to give people: happiness forever.

Not only a little happiness and after it nothing. We are giving good tidings to people to not worry. Because others are putting all people in hell. Mawlānā says, what Allāh ﷻ said in Qur’ān ‘Aẓīmu sh-Sha’n, ‘وَاللَّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَىٰ دَارِ السَّلَامِ’, ‘Wa-Llāhu yad‘ū ilá dāri s-salām’, ‘And Allah invites to the Home of Peace (i.e. Paradise).’ (Qur’ān 10:25). Allāh ﷻ is asking people to come to paradise. In shā’a Llāh we are all going to paradise.

And in shā’a Llāh, may He ﷻ make more people come to paradise, in shā’a Llāh. May Allāh ﷻ bless you, keep you safe and make you a means of guidance for these people, in shā’a Llāh.
