Don’t act on dreams

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm. The matter of dreams is always an issue for people. There are some that can be interpreted. Dreams that Prophets have are true dreams. They are by the order of Allah ﷻ. Sometimes Prophets did not receive revelations so orders came directly through dreams, or they had both dreams and revelations.

But for normal people, they should not act based on dreams. People who have dreams should not think, “l was ordered this in a dream, I have to do it”. You can do it if it’s good. Otherwise: “I will do this and that with my life”, no need to act based on the dream they had. Because the order of Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is clear. The things we must do are clear.

There are good dreams. Interpreting them well will be the means for goodness. When they have a bad dream, it is better not to share them. No harm will come then. If they share it with everyone – when someone competent in interpretation does it well, it will be good. If he does it badly, it will be bad. Therefore, it is not good to share it with everyone, or to interpret as they like. If they have a good dream, they should praise Allah ﷻ and make Shukr. If they have a bad one, no need to share it. As long as they don’t tell, there is no harm.

Most people, people of Dunya don’t show much importance to that. Nevertheless, there are many people who are influenced by the dreams they have. They get demoralized and say, “We had a bad dream”. When you have a bad dream, as long as you don’t share it, it is not important. If you have a good dream, praise Allah ﷻ, make Shukr and hope it is for the better insha’Allah.

When it is good, unless you make Istikharah, no need to follow it. “This person will marry you. This person is good. This person is bad.” Looking at people well or badly based on a dream is not necessary. Because only Prophets have true dreams and they are told what to do.

In terms of Shari’ah, you cannot act based on a dream. If the dream is good, it is good. But if you are told not to do goodness in a dream, or if you see that this person is good and that person is bad, don’t pay much attention to it. Because you will have made “سوء الظن”, “Su’u z-Zann”, bad assumptions out of nothing. And you will get badness. May Allah ﷻ protect us.

Therefore, the matter of dreams is a matter which needs to be paid attention, especially by the people of Tariqah. If the people of Tariqah act [accordingly], shaytan enters from that door and says, “You are having a dream.” He can show the bad as good and the good as bad. There are shaytani dreams, too. Therefore, be careful. May Allah ﷻ protect us. May we not obey our egos and may we always keep our ego down. May we not do what our egos want.

The matter of dreams, as we said, there are shaytani and Rahmani dreams. Whatever people see, imagine or do during the day they may see in their dreams at night. Therefore, the matter of dreams is a matter to be careful with. May they be the means for goodness. If an order comes to you in a dream to go here and there and to do this and that, no need to go by that order. May Allah ﷻ make our dreams the means for goodness insha’Allah. May we have all kinds of goodness insha’Allah.

Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
