Beware of Going to Extremes

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

‘وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا’

(Qur’ān 02:143)

‘Wa kadhalika ja’alnākum ‘ummatan wasatāa’

‘Thus We have appointed you a middle nation.’ Sadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, be an ummah in a middle state. Middle state means don’t go too far to one side or the other; be in the middle. Don’t be too strict, don’t be too lenient, don’t be too harsh. Everything should be in the middle state.

Now, the people of madhhab, the people of our ‎Prophet’s ﷺ ṭarīqah, whom we call the Ahlu s-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah, are in the middle.

Those outside their way have strayed from the way. They have strayed from our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam’s command. If you look at one side, they don’t accept all people, they don’t accept Muslims, they don’t accept their Islām. If you look at the other side, they are the same.

Therefore, those in the middle are the group that is Ahlu s-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah. They are the ones who go on the way of our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam.

Now, there are many here and there. In the past, someone would come out and do nothing. Now, they’re appearing before the people from all sides, lecturing them, giving rulings. From these machines and devices, they’re saying all sorts of things.

They say, “This is so, this is right, this is wrong, this did this, that did that,” according to their own minds. Then, they turn into enemies upon each other. And those in the middle are saved.

Otherwise, unfortunately, some listen to them and stray from the way. Because there is fitnah is everywhere. Fitnah is the work of shayṭān. He constantly strives to corrupt Islām and corrupt people.

Therefore, we should always not go to extremes. Going to extremes is harmful. Extremism is not good. By being moderate, you benefit yourself, benefit others, and find comfort. You preserve your religion.

Otherwise, those who lean towards the Ahlu l-Bayt are Ahlu s-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah. Those who lean towards the Companions are Ahlu s-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah. Those who curse the Companions are the extremists. Those who curse Ahlu l-Bayt are those who go to extremes also.

So in this situation, many fabricate all sorts of lies and falsehoods showing them as truths in order to deceive people. And many even fabricate ḥadīth sharīf. Many reject the ḥadīth sharīf. Some groups even reject the Qur’ān, saying, “The Qur’ān is still hidden, and it will still be revealed.”

Therefore, the way of ṭarīqah is the middle way. Therefore, following it is beneficial for all Muslims. Otherwise, they say, the one without a murshid, his murshid is shayṭān. That situation harms people. It is good to be in the middle at all times, both for dunyā and ākhirah.

May Allāh ﷻ protect us. May He ﷻ not make us conform to our egos. May we not go to extremes, in shā’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.

Al-Fatiha.
