Appreciate the Value of Time

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says,

“أَيَّامٍ مَّعْدُودَاتٍ”

“Āyyāmin Ma’đūdāt”

(Qur’ān 02:203)

“[Specific] numbered days.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

These are numbered days. Everything is numbered. It is numbered in the good, and it is numbered in the bad. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says it is also numbered in the fasting.

This last month of the worship of ḥajj is also numbered. A month ago before ḥajj, everyone was anxious about going to ḥajj, “How will it be? What will we do?” and so on. These blessed days have passed too. These numbered days were gained. These are not such a lot of days to be spent.

“Let’s kill time.” People who spend time without appreciating its value are in loss. A person’s life is the most precious thing. The most precious thing in a person’s life is time. Because how long is one’s time? When does it end? Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla says, these are numbered days.

Therefore, a person must definitely know its value. He who knows the value of what is given, wins. He who doesn’t know its value, wins nothing. Then, he regrets it, “I have thrown away so many valuable things. I haven’t appreciated them. I haven’t respected them. I have passed them by without valuing them.”

Sometimes they even say, “We killed time.” The word of most people nowadays is “Killing time.” If you kill time, you will have ruined yourself. You will have thrown jewels in the trash.

Therefore, these blessed days have come and are gone. People should be careful about those coming next. They should appreciate the value of time. Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla has appointed a time, an hour for everyone. Everyone has a time. May we appreciate the value of time before that time comes, in shā’a Llāh.

May Allāh ﷻ make us all among those who appreciate time, and not spend it in vain, in shā’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.
