Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm,
وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ
(Qur’ān 05:02). ‘Wa ta‘āwanū ‘ala l-birri wa t-taqwā wa la ta‘āwanū ‘ala l-lithmī wa l-‘udwān’, ‘And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.’ Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘aẓīm.
Allah ‘Azza wa-Jalla is saying, “Help each other in doing goodness.” He ﷻ says “birr” for goodness. The word “birr” is a word that covers all goodness in it. Praying, fasting, zakāh, ḥajj, all kinds of goodness are in it. He ﷻ says, “Help each other in doing that.” Whoever helps with it attains rewards and thawāb. You will do this thing together as a community, and mercy will descend on you.
Run towards goodness, says Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla. And the whole life of our Holy Prophet ﷺ was assigned with doing goodness to people and ordering goodness. This duty is wājib to all Muslims until qiyāmah. They must do it for their benefit and for their own goodness. This order means that our Holy Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam wants all goodness to his ﷺ ummah. He ﷺ wants intercession and goodness for his ﷺ ummah.
He ﷺ wants them to stay away from evil. “وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ”, ‘Wa la ta‘āwanū ‘ala l-lithmī wa l-‘udwān’, ‘But do not cooperate in sin and aggression.’ (Qur’ān 05:02). “And don’t help each other in badness”, says āyatu l-karīmah. Just like “birr”, “ithm” is the word that covers all badness in it. It is a sin to do it. “Ithm” is doing sins, ḥarām and evil.
Don’t help each other with it. If someone tells you “Let’s do this. Let’s do it together”, don’t help him. If he wants to do it, prevent him if you can. If you can’t prevent him, don’t help him. Stay away. Tell him you won’t do it. Tell him “I’m afraid of Allāh ﷻ. What you said is not a good thing. It is not good for you and it is not good for me. Beware. I am not stopping you, but let me give you an advice. Don’t do this badness. Don’t do what is ḥarām. Don’t drink alcohol. Don’t commit adultery. Don’t steal. Don’t oppress people.” You should advise him not to do all of these things. Don’t help him but try to stop him. What you must do is prevent him.
Allāh ﷻ said this according to people’s strength. He ﷻ says you should do what you can. If you can’t prevent him, say in your heart that you are not happy with it and that you won’t do it. It will give peace to people. Avoiding doing badness gives relief and happiness. And doing badness leads people to all kinds of hardship and all kinds of troubles. There is no relief with troubles and ḥarām. There is no goodness and no peace. Peace, goodness and relief are with goodness and doing goodness. May Allāh ﷻ grant it to all of us inshā’aLlāh.
Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq. Al-Fatiha.
