Don’t Fear Safar ul-Khayr

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِندَ اللَّهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا

(Qur’ān 09:36)

“Inna ‘Iddata Ash-Shuhūri ‘Inda Allāhi Athnā ‘Ashara Shahrāan”

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months.” Ṣadaqa Llāhu l-‘Aẓīm.

In the sight of Allāh ﷻ, Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla divided the months of the year into twelve months. Muḥarram was one of the last sacred months. Yesterday was the last day. After that is this month of Safar. This month is a normal month. It isn’t from the sacred months. They are the more virtuous months.

The month of Safar sometimes comes heavy upon people. Therefore, sadaqah is important. Sadaqah prevents accidents and afflictions, and prolongs life. Giving it in everything, in every hardship, makes things easier.

It also protects against evil. It protects against badness. In this month of Safar, people should give sadaqah every day, and repent and ask forgiveness. They should beg Allāh ﷻ so that Allāh ﷻ may protect them.

What Allāh ‘Azza wa-Jalla wills happens. Allāh’s ﷻ wisdom is with Him ﷻ. He ﷻ does what He ﷻ wants. No one can prevent it. But He ﷻ is merciful to us. What we do from repentance, istighfār and sadaqah prevents accidents, with the permission of Allāh ﷻ.

Allāh ﷻ makes things happen as He ﷻ wants. ‘يَمْحُو اللَّهُ مَا يَشَاءُ وَيُثْبِتُ’, ‘Yamhū Allahu mā yashā’u wa yuthbit’, ‘Allah eliminates what He wills or confirms.’ (Qur’ān 13:39). He ﷻ does as He ﷻ wants. There’s this whole matter of destiny also. It is in Allāh’s ﷻ knowledge. We cannot understand it. But what we do understand is this month of Safar.

People are afraid of the month of Safar. There is nothing to fear. Give your sadaqah and repent. Perform your daily duties. The duty of the month of Safar is different. They’ve already published that. After you do it, rely upon Allāh ﷻ. Then, do everything. Don’t be afraid, with the permission of Allāh ﷻ.

Our Prophet ṣallá Llāhu ‘alayhi wa-sallam used to say, “Safaru l-Khayr.” Safar the good. “Interpret everything as good, it will be good,” he ‎ﷺ says. People are now having waswasa, “No, this will happen. I don’t know what will happen.” And as they kept having waswasa, an illness broke out called panic attack. They get afraid of everything. If they hear a loud noise, they say they’d almost collapse.

Therefore, relying upon Allāh ﷻ is a characteristic of the believer. If you follow the way shown, do not fear. Rely upon Allāh ﷻ, Allāh ﷻ will protect you. The most important thing is to preserve your īmān. The rest is not important. But with the permission of Allāh ﷻ, you will still be under protection, always, all the time, in shā’a Llāh. Wa min Allah at-Tawfiq.
