6th Rabiʽ al-Awwal: Mawlid of Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

The 6th of Rabiʽ al-Awwal marks the blessed birth of Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumiق, one of the most celebrated poets and spiritual guides in Islamic history.

He is remembered across centuries for his depth of wisdom, his love for Allah ﷻ, and his ability to turn the hearts of seekers toward the Divine.

Mawlana Rumiق was born in 604 AH in Balkh, then a renowned centre of Islamic scholarship. His noble lineage traced back to Abu Bakr as-Siddiqر. His father, Sultan al-Ulama Bahauddin Waladق, was a distinguished scholar and spiritual master, and his upbringing was steeped in Qur’anic learning, Hadith, and the company of Saints.

Due to political unrest, the family travelled extensively through the Islamic world, eventually settling in Konya, Anatolia.

In his early years, Mawlana Rumiق became known as a brilliant scholar and jurist, teaching Islamic law, theology, and the spiritual sciences. Yet the turning point of his life came with his encounter with the wandering dervish, Shams al-Tabriziق.

That meeting transformed him from a man of books into a man of burning love for Allah ﷻ. Shams al-Tabriziق became the mirror that reflected his deepest yearning for the Divine, and their companionship awakened a poetic outpouring that still speaks to the hearts of millions today.

He would later say, “Through love, all bitterness will sweeten. Through love, all copper will turn to gold. Through love, dregs will become clear. Through love, the dead will become alive.”

His verses, preserved in the Mathnawi and the Diwan-e Shams-e Tabrizi, are not mere poetry but oceans of meaning. Through them, he expressed the soul’s longing for its Creator, the mystery of spiritual union, and the path of love as the highest form of worship.

Mawlana Rumiق taught that the essence of religion is not in formality alone, but in the living heart that remembers Allah ﷻ at every moment. He reminded seekers, “The religion of love is apart from all religions. For lovers, the only religion and creed is God.”

Among his well-known teachings is the view that every trial, joy, and encounter is a guest sent by Allah ﷻ to refine the soul. In his words, “Try to accept the changing seasons of your life, for each comes to prepare you for a new flowering.”

His gatherings were filled with remembrance, poetry, and music, not for entertainment, but as a means to draw hearts toward Divine presence. He would say, “Be like a candle. Bring light to others, and burn yourself in the process,” teaching that true service requires sacrifice, and that the ego must be consumed so that only the light of love for Allah ﷻ may shine.

Mawlana Rumiق’s life and works are deeply honoured by our Naqshbandi Masters, for they embody sincerity, unceasing remembrance, and annihilation in Allah ﷻ.

His light continues to shine in our time through Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Adilق, whose noble lineage through his grandmother reaches back to Mawlana Rumiق.

Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumiق left this world on 5 Jumada al-Thani 672 AH. He called his passing his “Wedding Night” for it was the moment he returned to the Beloved he had yearned for all his life.

Centuries later, his words still carry the fragrance of love and the call to journey inward, toward the Light that never fades.

To this day, his resting place in Konya remains a place of Ziyarah for seekers from all over the world, who come to pay their respects and be inspired by his legacy.

May Allah ﷻ elevate his rank and allow us to taste the sincerity and sweetness of love for Him that Mawlana Rumiق embodied.

Al-Fatiha.
