17th Rabi’ al-Awwal: Urs of Shaykh Abu Ahmad as-Sughuri, 36th Grandshaykh of the Naqshbandi Golden Chain

Bismi Llāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm

The 17th of Rabi’ al-Awwal marks the blessed Urs of Shaykh Abu Ahmad as-Sughuriق, the 36th Grandshaykh of the Naqshbandi Golden Chain.

He was a shining example of faith, discipline, and selfless devotion. His very presence carried the fragrance of the Awliya, and his path was an ocean of adab, knowledge, and hidden blessings.

Shaykh Abu Ahmad as-Sughuriق lived during a time when the Naqshbandi Way was faced with both subtle and open challenges. Yet his heart remained like an unshakable mountain, and his guidance was a shelter for seekers.

Born in the small village of Sughur, Shaykh Abu Ahmad as-Sughuriق grew up amid the quiet beauty of rural life, yet his eyes were always fixed upon the Heavens.

From a young age, he displayed a deep love for worship and an insatiable thirst for spiritual knowledge. This yearning guided him to seek the company of the pious and devoted.

This yearning for the Divine brought him to his Shaykh, Khwāja Yusuf Hamadaniق, from whom he inherited the blessings and wisdom of the Naqshbandi Golden Chain.

Shaykh Abu Ahmad as-Sughuriق was known for his immense humility. Despite being a Master of the Way and a carrier of the deepest secrets, he lived as if he were the most ordinary of people.

There is a famous story that whenever guests would arrive unexpectedly, he would rush to prepare food with his own hands, saying, “How can I allow someone to serve for me when I am capable of serving them myself?” This was his way, concealing his spiritual rank under the veil of service.

One of the most well-known sayings attributed to him is, “A heart that looks for faults in others is a heart veiled from its own sickness.” Mureeds recall how in his Sohbahs, there was no loudness, no arrogance. He would speak softly, yet his words would enter the heart and stay there for a lifetime.

There is a story from one of his close mureeds who had been struggling with doubts. This mureed confessed his struggles to Shaykh Abu Ahmadiق, expecting to be reprimanded.

Instead, the Shaykh simply placed his hand over the mureed’s heart and said, “You are not your thoughts. You are what you feed your heart.” From that moment, the mureed said, his life changed entirely, for he began to feed his heart with Qur’an, dhikr, and the company of the righteous.

In his time, Shaykh Abu Ahmadق was also known for his deep connection to the earth. He would spend long hours tending to gardens, planting trees, and caring for animals.

He would remind his mureeds, “The earth is a trust from Allah ﷻ. If you plant goodness in it, it will testify for you on the Day of Judgment.”

In this way, he taught that the spiritual path is not separate from daily life. Every action, no matter how small, could be a form of worship if done with sincerity.

His Sohbahs were often simple in wording but deep in meaning. He would tell the mureeds, “Our way is the way of the heart. If the heart is polished, the eyes will see clearly, the tongue will speak truth, and the hands will act with mercy.”

It is said that during his final days, he remained in constant dhikr, his lips moving even when his body was too weak to rise.

Those who were with him during his last breaths recall that his face shone with tranquility, as if he were already seeing the gardens of Jannah opening before him.

The news of his passing brought tears to the eyes of many, for they had lost not just a Grandshaykh, but a father, a teacher, and a friend. Yet his teachings continue to live on in the hearts of his mureeds, and his spiritual presence was felt strongly by those who loved him.

The Urs of Shaykh Abu Ahmad as-Sughuriق is a day to serve others in quiet humility, without seeking recognition, and to purify the heart from the stains of this world, just as he taught.

May Allah ﷻ raise his station, sanctify his secret, and allow us to inherit from his light, humility, and sincerity.

And may we be granted the honor of being among those who keep his way alive until the end of our days.

Al-Fatiha.
